My question is mainly for the G6, however any info on other carts would, I believe, be of use to other readers as well. Anyway, if I delete a rom (which is backed up from a version of a game I purchased legally and still own), will I also lose all save game information associated with that game? For instance, if I play "RPG-X" for 100 hours, save my ultimate game, beat the master wizard, then -- in order to make space for "RPG-X2" -- delete the original "RPG-X" from my G6, will I be able to load the original "RPG-X" again at a later date and pick up from that old saved game right before I toppled the master wizard? Furthermore, can you simply "save" said save file to your computer and then load that again as well at a later date?
it depends on how you delete it from the G6. If you go in there using windows explorer or just double clicking the drive, and delete the actual ROM file, your save will still be on there. The problem with that is, when you go to write the ROM again to your drive, you will overwrite your old save (unless you backed it up or renamed it). I would suggest going in there using windows explorer or whatever, and finding the save files. Back those save files up to your computer somewhere, and keep them safe. Whenever you decide to replay GAME1, write that game on there, and then copy your old save back onto the G6. It should, if everything checks out, resume from your 100 hours. If it doesnt, no worries.. you still have the original save file so you would be able to find a way to restore it
Or you can do it straight from the G6 Disk Manager. Click on your game, you will see 3 different filenames in the bottom half of the manager window called NameOfYourGame.# (where #is either 0, 1 or 2). Click on one of those files then click "Read", this will backup your save file to disk. If you didn't mess around with the alternate save files on your G6, you should be OK copying just the 0 file, but if in doubt copy them all, they're not that big anyway. You can now safely delete your game. Inversely, when you write your ROM again, these save slots are created again. Click on the 0 slot, then on "Write" and replace it with your backed up save. Voilà! Try loading a ROM, starting a new game, and saving, then play around a little with the save backing up if you're unsure. That way if you mess up, it won't be a big deal. Once you're sure, move on to deleting games with important saves. That's what I did
