This could be because the Audio in your AVI file is VBR MP3 and no matter what you do when Splitting an AVI file with VBR MP3 audio it will go out of Sync...
What you have to do is decompress the audio to Wav while splitting the AVI file, and then if you want to compress the audio back to Mp3 you will have to do it after you have split the AVI file...Plus you MUST make all of your Edits on KeyFrames or the audio will go out of Sync.....
This is how you do it useing "Virtual-Dub"...
    Virtual-Dub-Mpeg2
    http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/VirtualDub-MPEG2.zip

First Run virtual-Dub and then load in your AVI file...You will Probably get a warning telling you that your Audio Is VBR .....
After Loading in your AVI file go to "Video" and set it to "Direct Stream Copy" and then go to "Audio" and set it to "Full Processing Mode".....
Now use the "Mark In" and "Mark Out" Buttons to set your Cut Points but make sure you use the "keyFrame" buttons (Looks like a yellow Key) to navigate to the Frame were you want to make the Cut for the First part...
After chooseing the First Part you will see a Blue Line under the Part of the Video you will be saveing in the First Part....
To save the First Part go to "File" to "Save AVI" and give the File a Name like "Movie File Part#01.avi" and save it and in a few minutes you will have the First part.....
Now just repeat for Part Two.....
After you have cut the Files you will notice that they are a lot bigger that it was before and this is because the audio is Uncompressed...If you are going to encode these file to Mpeg for VCD/SVCD or DVD you can just go ahead and encode them but if you are going to burn the AVI files to CD-R as AVI files you will have to re-compress the audio in the AVI files.......Well Good Luck...Cheers
