ok, i have just softmodded my xbox now i cant get back to the xbox dashboard to sort out memory, xbox live and access my music what should i do?
I used the following approach- downloaded softmod installer deluxe off xbins, using flashFXP,used an action replay to transfer the splinter cell linux data to the xbox and the conversion seemed to work, only the dashboard isnt reachable.

what modded dashboard are you using?there should be an option that says ms dash....if not put splintercell back in and go to the sid 4.0 screen....use the file manager and go to the C Drive and click the .xbe file in there and it will boot the ms-dash...

like i said on the evox dash there should be a ms-dash option, if not then you can create an application folder and ftp unleashx to there and i know there is an ms-dash option on that dashboard.....

Sounds like you didn't install it as a dual boot.

Meaning, you can't access your MS dash because it's either been deleted or the soft mod that you installed won't allow you to boot to it.

You can transfer the SC exploit save by loading up EvoX and using your PC to transfer it directly to E.

Or, if I remember right UnleashX can mount memory cards and you can transfer files from your memory card to your Xbox hard drive. I know for a fact that XBMC does, but I can't remember if UnleashX did or not.

or use unleashx and check if the ms-dash is in your C folder if so you should be able to boot the .xbe from the file manager...

Error 21, and you can't boot games? Not good...

Slayer's won't do you much good now, since you won't be able to boot it. If your soft mod had still been working, you would have been able to boot it from a DVD-R.

Now, you're left with a few choices...

    1. If you have the EEPROM, use xboxhdm to reinstall the softmod and MS dash.
    2. If you don't have the EEPROM, you'll have to hot swap.
    3. If you don't have the EEPROM, and don't want to hot swap, you can install a mod chip and reinstall everything using Slayer's or AID.

Answer 1 - Unless you get a mod chip, you can't just install a new hard drive in it since you'll have to have the EEPROM (the hard drive's lock password) to even make it work on a stock Xbox. Not to mention, you'd have to prepare it prior to use with xboxhdm.
Answer 2 - Torrents. I don't know of any websites that direct host it. Also, without a chip, you can't use an installer of any sort on your Xbox either. If it can't even play retail games, it surely won't be able to boot unsigned code (homebrew applications aren't signed by MS). AID and Slayer's are both useless to you without a mod chip, since a stock Xbox can't boot them.

For xboxhdm usage, you may want to read this guide.

    [bold]Long Explanation[/bold]
21 - anywhere - This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag

Basically, since your dashboards are messed up, it's booting to an error 21. In some cases, even with an error 21, you can still boot games. However, since you can't boot any games the situation is even worse. It basically means that unless you have a back-up of your hard drive on your PC with the EEPROM, you're limited as to how you can fix your Xbox.

The reason the EEPROM is so important is that your hard drive and motherboard are a pair. The EEPROM is stored on the motherboard, and whenever the Xbox is off, the hard drive must be locked (in both stock and softmodded Xbox consoles). Not so with mod chips, but I'll get into that later. When the Xbox boots up, the motherboard unlocks the hard drive using the EEPROM. If the EEPROM doesn't match or the hard drive is unlocked prior to boot, the Xbox will give you an error message. This is why you can't just replace the hard drive. Additionally, because the Xbox hard drive is locked while the Xbox is shut off, you can't just put it in your PC and modify files either. You'd need the EEPROM to unlock it and xboxhdm to repair it using your PC.

Don't fret though if you don't have the EEPROM, as there is a method known as hot swapping, which doesn't require the EEPROM. However, it does require a very specific procedure, and if you don't follow it to the letter, you could very well end up with an even more problems.

Here's a hot swap guide that you may want to read over.

Now, about the use of mod chips. Ultimately, this is probably the easiest route for you to take, especially if you want to use an autoinstaller to fix the problem. Basically, all you would need to do with a mod chip is install it, flash it with the necessary BIOS, and run Slayer's or AID to reinstall everything. Dashboards, apps, everything. No need to hot swap, no worrying about incompatible files, nothing. You can even use it to reinstall the MS dash and have complete access to Xbox Live (while the chip is disabled of course).
