I'm trying to convert an AVI file created with my still video camera to a mpg. However when I try to select the file, even though avi is listed, it says it can not use the file. Whats up?

I assume you are speaking of digital camcorder? TMPGEnc doesn't support DV type 1, only DV type 2 files.

Actually I tried 2 cameras, a creative labs web cam and the other is a Nikon coolpix 775

The format is probably the problem -- for some reason you don't have either playback codecs installed correctly or they store the video in some weird non-compliant AVI format. Open the AVI with WiMP and see the video properties and you should be able to see what codec it uses for playback.
