I am new here. Recently, I have some problems of my Toshiba 5205-S703 DVD-RW drive(I think it is Toshiba model SD-6012). I used google and found one article here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/44653 I hope I can get some help here. I purchased this Toshiba 5205-s703 for more that half a year. I did use the DVD-RW writor after I got it(in the second month). Totally, I have burned about 10 Fujifilm DVD-Rs(one box) from Best buy. They were all OK. None of them have any problems. Some of them I even burned to full 4.3G. However, most of them were backup files (zip, less than 10 files per DVD-R). Several month later, I purchased a new box of the same brand Fujifilm from Best Buy. From the first DVD-R, I got problem. The burning process has no error. But when I try to copy those files (mp3, rm, avi) back to HD, I got CRC error. For 40 files, sometimes it begins to fail from the sixth, some times it begin to fail from the 20th. Different DVD-ROM drive from other people's laptop or desktop will fail at different place. I updated Nero to 5.5.10.50. I have tried to use UDF/ISO mode as some web page suggest. I have tried 1x although previously I have used 2x without problems. I have tried Optimum DVD-R. I have used those CD/DVD cleaner to clean the DVD drive. None of them solve the problem. Of course, I have wasted about 6 pieces of DVD-R. I want to know what kind of test I should do before I return the machine to Toshiba to repair? I have installed many softwares after successfully burning the first box of DVD-R. I am wondering whether some of those software may alter the configuration of the machine and lead to these CRC erros. During the period of time when I did not burn any DVD-R, I did watch many DVD movies. I am wondering whether this will damage the DVD-RW drive. I just hate to backup everything and return the machine to Toshiba. I really wish it is software problem instead of hardware problem. How do I know whether it is software problem, media problem or hardware problem. Any help or suggestion will be great appreciated. Riverseow
hi all your problem sounds bad but i have had this sort of thing when i transferred files and folders from one hard drive to another! have you done this? also i think it was how i burnt them meaning that the ISO9660/JOLIET standard was part the problem! as in i had long file names !!!! the long file names after didnt show up in nero to burn again after transfer! but data files were fine and i could click the image but the title file name didnt show? and i think burnt ok as i have used them since?! it was game backups that CRC errored after transfer from one HD to another? does this ring any bells for you? Rotary, Thanks for your reply. My CRC problem occured when I try to copy those files from the DVD-R back to HD. I always copy all the files back to HD to make sure that they have been burned correctly. I did doubt about the long file name. Because when I burned the first box of Fujifilm DVD-R. Most of them have very few files and most of files have short file name. However, what puzzled me is that I have 40 files all with long filenames, why only start with certain file? For example, sometimes the 6th, sometimes the 20th. If it is the ISO/JOLIET problem, it should have problem with the first one. However, maybe I should just compress those MP3/AVI/RM into big zip file with 8+3 filename. I have not tried that. Do you think I should disable the Joliet? Thanks again for your reply. River
hi yes it does seem odd? try what you say it may work? but to copy sometin from hd to disc usally says it was currupt from the HD! Thx...
