    Hello all,

I would like to seek some help from you Video gurus out there. I have 2 files that are a MP4 file. The information I received from the files are that they are a

    MS MPEG4 V1 (Windows Media 7)
    Apple QuickTime MPEG-4 native

    in a mp4 wrapper.

My question is what decoder/codec would I need to transcode these files into a something else Ex: divx,h264, etc

I've used Final cut pro 5 and Virtual dub to try to transcode these files but, I've had no success with them.

I was able to transcode these files using WinAvi but, I don't want to rely on a point n click mickey mouse programs (which works pretty good). I particularly want to use Virtual dubMOD. Since thats my baby. I just need to know what type of codec or setting I would to need to trancode these files. I uploaded 2 small clips onto megaupload maybe if any guru would like to peep the files pleae be my guest. Its definitely virus free.

    thanks a million.

Thanks pryme...i'll will let you know how this works out...but this also would be a point and click solution. Not saying I don't like simplicity, I want to find a way to be able to reencode this clip via Virtual Dub or just even simply finding out how to get the De/codec for the 2 clips.

    thanks in advance.

To determine what codecs are present use VSO VideoInspector. Here's a complete guide on how to re-encode with VirtualDub.

I used a program a called AVI Codec and Gspot to detect what kind of movie file it is. Would that be the same as Video Inspector? Also the link to divx digest is dead but, i'm pretty sure i've read that one before. The domain is not available. I understand how to use Virtual Dub and identifying the codecs. I can't get my files would work on VDub, it generates a cannot open file error. Which makes me think that I might not have the right de/codec for this file.

    thanks once again.

    MS Mpeg4 V1 (Wm 7)

This is how a file looks like in VideoInspector. From it, you can directly download missing audio and video codecs.

    @artietang,
If you like VirtualDub, you will like Avidemux...except Avidemux will do the job for you!!
I think of Avidemux as VDub...just more versatile:~)

I reencoded the WM7 file to a X264(free source H.264), and the QT to an Xvid(will play in ~any Divx player). Worked like a breeze. You can choose different codec and container. I reencoded the video only, direct stream copy for the audio. You can reencode the audio if you wish so.I reencoded them with the default settings for the codecs, but you can choose the settings for your codec. 3 minutes for both clips.
The codecs come bundled, you don't have to install any.
