Ok I recently bought a HP pavillion notebook and I am trying to move some files from my desktop over to the laptop. I've read as much info on this as I can find and it just dosent want to work. Both are operating in windows XP.I asked the people at my local radioshack what to do. They said I needed a crossover cable to transfer files so I bought one and did as they instructed for setting up a workgroup. So i go home and try to set this up after two failed attempts somehow I got it up and running, this is when I transfered some of the files I wanted at that time. So fastforward a day and I plug back in the crossover cable thinking its all setup for me and nothing. Ive tried everything I can remember doing the first time and a few other things all of which have no effect.
So the bottom line is... I dont care if its networked or not and i dont care if my laptop can't get to the internet, all i want is to transfer files from desktop to laptop. Any info on this will be greatly appriciated. I really hope someone knows and can help me out.

I get what you're saying but, thats not exactly cost effective for me even with re-write disks. You see I do alot of work with video and audio files so I thought I could transfer the files to the laptop and work on them in my spare time when I'm away from the desktop. So once again if anyone knows how to connect a desktop to a laptop to transfer files I appreciate any help. Thanks

what do you mean not cost effective. surely this warrants the purchase of 1 dvdrw...remember its nearly 5 gigabytes a disc, and how much does your laptop harddrive have? i transfer video and audio through on mine no problem and no loss of quality when i'm changing between computers. [have you thought of getting a usb cable and connecting them via that? note: i don't know whether this works, jst a suggestion]

You're right I was told that you can only use a DVDRW a couple of times before it goes bad, so today I posted a question about how many times you can re-write on a DVDRW and found out that it can be in the hundreds without loss of quality. And yes I thought of the USB connection but radioshack did't have one however I found out that my local office max does so I'm gonna check that out tonight, if not im just gonna buy some disks. Thanks for the help.

In the long run I would try the networking again. Once you get it figured out it will be easier and faster in the long run. You should just have to have both pcs in the same workgroup and same user account and password on both pcs and both in the same subnet, like one using 192.168.0.1 and the other using 192.168.0.2.

Ok well I bought the USB to USB transfer cable last night and while it is a tad slow it seems to do the trick for the moment, however I don't like the idea that I have been defeated in trying to network these to PC's together. So if you could give me a detailed process I could go through that would be great particularly making sure both are on the same account and where/how to set up a subnet mask. Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for all the help with all this stuff you guys you've been a real help so far. I do have one other question though. If the computers are NOT sharing an internet connection or not networked at all yet (meaning my desktop and laptop), shouldn't I be able to just plug my ethernet cable into the RJ port on my laptop to connect so I can get updates for things. When I got my new desktop a year or so back thats all I did to connect and it worked fine. Now for the strange part (there is always a strange part) the first night I got the laptop I went to the router that splits all of our connections in the house (3 PC's not networked) and pluged the WAN cable directly into the RJ port and I was connected, I got my first round of updates and I was happy. Now when I try to plug into the WAN it brings up a home page but I cant go anywhere on the internet and I can't get anywhere from any of the cables running through the house. I just says that limited or no connectivity message again. Any ideas?
