transfering vhs to pc

i`m obviously new to this, so bear with me please.
i am wanting to transfer from vhs tape to pc, what do i need? i have transfered from camcorder to pc using a firewire with no probs.
Have looked on the net at canopus and dazzle plus others but don`t really know what i need.

Check to see if your cam has "passthrough".
If so, plug the VCR to the cam, and do it the way you have been.
If not, you need a capture device of some sort.
They range in price, and quality. You get what you pay for, is very true here.
Time can also be an issue.
Look in the Video Capturing forum, this has already been covered in great agonizing detail

would that be the s video connection?

 

You'll have to read the manual for your cam.
The S-video could be only video out, not input.
If your cam has both, then it's got passthrough.
