Over the last week I have somehow obtained a redirect problem when I perform searches on Google or Yahoo. The problem will also not let me connect to spyware websites to perform live updates. I have looked into many other forums and run just about every software checker I could find but with no luck. Here is my HiJackThis log file if someone could please analyze:

    Hi Atrain10,

Sounds like you may have picked up the Trojan DNSchanger…

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.

Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free

    • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
    • Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
    • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
    • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    o Close browsers before scanning.
    o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

    • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
Do not run a scan just yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

    • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.

    • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:

    • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
    • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
    • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

    • Click Close to exit the program.

    Reboot to Normal Mode

2oG, No that did not resolve the problem. The redirect still exists
everytime I try to access a link from a search engine.

Hummm, First let’s see if your Host file has been compromised:

    Please download HostXpert.

    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
    • Then click on "Restore ms Hosts file" to restore your Hosts file to its default condidtion..
    • Click on Make Read Only to secure it against further infection.
    • Close program when complete.

If that doesn’t correct the problem, then we can use a Big Gun to maybe do it:

    1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations.
    * IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
    http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

    2. Click start > run and Copy and Paste this in exactly, using the picture below for reference, then click OK.

    3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTHING while this is happening.
    • It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet.
    • If by chance it stops prematurely you can re-establish your internet connection by restarting your computer.
    • This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you.
Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you.

**Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.

If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer

Post the log from comboFix for me located in
    c:\comboFix.txt

2oG, I ran the HostsXpert.exe and made it "Read Only" but that did not fix the problem. Here is the ComboFix log:

2oG, After I ran the ComboFix.exe I restarted my computer and my search engines appear to be back to normal. My Norton and other virus software also prompted me for Live Updates which I could not do since the trojan has infected my computer. Thank you very much for your help and support. I will let you know if any problems persist. Thanks again.

    Atrain10, here are a few Tips…

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Remove Old Java using JavaRa

Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
    • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program
    • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select
    • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer
    • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK
    • A logfile will pop up. Save it to a convenient location
    • Click on Additional Tasks then tick Remove Useless JRE Files
    • Click Go then OK when prompted & close the program.

    Update Java Runtime

    • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
    • Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12 and click on the Download button
    • In the Platform box choose Windows
    • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue
    • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop
    • Install the new version by running the downloaded file with the Java icon & follow the on-screen instructions
    • Reboot your computer

Get rid of your Norton and get a better AntiVirus. See the comparatives:
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_08.php

Avira AntiVir is a better AV (even the Free version)

If you have trouble uninstalling Norton see here:
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

    Download and install Avira AntiVir

Hate nag screens? Me too. I use Avira AntiVir and here's how to stop that annoying Avira Antivir PE Classic avnotify nag screen:
    http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm

SpywareBlaster is passive protection. It plugs the holes that spyware and other potentially unwanted software use to get in to your system. As such, there is no running process - and no CPU and memory usage either. All you have to do is remember to update SpywareBlaster once a week, and enable the latest protection. Protection against spyware, adware, dialers, browser hijackers, and other potentially unwanted software.

    Tutorial and download:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html

Download: Comodo BOClean protects your computer against trojans, malware and other threats. It constantly scans your system in the background and intercepts any recognized trojan activity. The program can ask the user what to do, or run in unattended mode and automatically shutdown and remove any suspected trojan application. Comodo BOClean currently supports more than 71,000 malware items and offers automatic daily updates. Other features include updating via network share, tamper protection and stealth mode.
Antivirus software frequently fails to detect, and more often fails to effectively clean most malware. BOClean runs automatically in the background without interfering with your work and kills malwares INSTANTLY the moment they activate without giving them the chance to invade your machine. BOClean also eliminates the need to stop what you're doing to secure your machine after it's too late. BOClean works with all versions of Windows. Unlike antivirus programs, BOClean will actually shut them down and destroy them without the need for you to seek out the method of removal or risking dangerous editing of your system's innermost configurations. BOClean requires no technical skills and handles detection, removal and repair of your system automatically.

Hope these tips help, any questions? Fire!

2oG, Thank you for the recommendations for my computer. I have installed all the software you recommended and all seems to be running well. I will inform you if any other problems "pop-up". Thank you again.
