    Hello everyone...

I have a bunch of mkv files that I have converted to avi/xvid. They work fine except there are no subtitles.

I have extracted the subtitles from the mkv files using MKVExtract, they were extracted as .ass files.

I then converted the .ass files to .ssa files using subtitle workshop.

Then in virtualdub I used the subtitler filter to add the subtitles, virtualdub runs through and encodes my video, but when it's done, the subtitles dont appear on the video!

I'm not sure what I might be doing wrong if anything.

    Anyone have any ideas??

    Thanks!
    Kyle

Do they show up in the "Preview" feature of Subtitler or in the output when it's played back in Virtualdub (before saving).

They seem to show up fine in Subtitle workshop when i load in both the subtitles and the video.

But they do not show up in virtualdub at all.

I tried using Xilisoft Ultimate video converter also because it has an option to use subtitles... that actually worked, but the subtitles were HUGE, so I went into the subtitle files and tried changing the font size and the scale values, but both had no effect, they just stayed huge when i used xilisoft.

Here's a short clip with video and .ssa file.
Use Subtitler to open the .ssa and use Subtitlers preview feature to check that they are present before saving the new avi.
You can compare this .ssa file with yours using Notepad.

    That worked!

I changed around my .ssa file to look more like the one you sent... I'm not sure which lines in mine were messing it up, but it now works properly in virtualdub.

    Thanks!

    Hi everyone,
Ive got 2 srt files...1st in sync the other was way out...so I messed about with Time Adjuster and got it to work with the movie.
When I joined the two srt files only the first half would show up on the movie..while I had to reload the second srt file seperately. So I tried to join them with Subtitle Workshop with the same result..also tried with SubSync,Xilisoft DVD Ripper and a host of various other great programmes, all with no result..Im at a loss as to what to do next...please help.

Do you have the movie in two parts and the subtitle in two parts?

    Hi again...
No..the avi is one file only, it came with 2 srt files..the 1st was fine till about 10 mins from the end..then that was it all went to pot.
I've now got two srt files in perfect sync when I play the movie...but when I join them its either the first half has subs or the second half has them and I have to reload the subs seperatly.

That's because you don't have a reference point for where the second subtitle part should start...You need to set a proper gap between the joined parts.

Open the joined sub and the video in Subtitle Workshop. Run the video until the sub gets off sync, then stop. Select the subtitle line that matches that point on the video and all the remaining lines and press on the move button. That should fix it, if the second part is in "sync" just shifted.

No problem, glad you got it to work!
It is strange that the movie came in one piece and the subs in two pieces. Must've been ripped/loaded by different persons, usually it all(movie/subs) comes in one or many parts. Sometimes when you have a movie with one single part and no subs, when you look for subs in the usual places, look for those that say 1 CD(or 2CD if the movie is in 2 parts). The entire joining/synchronizing process becomes so much easier.

It is a bit harder to perfectly join 2 subs and have them in one step when you don't have a reference point from where the second sub segment should start.
