Im trying to put a new HD in my xbox. I have followed pretty much every tutorial i can get my hands on and i just cant get my xbox to boot anything. Ive tried several different versions of EVOX and Slayers and everytime i try to boot from the disk i get an error 16 screen. From what i understand its suppose to work even if the HDD is empty. I also understand that a game should still load even if the HDD is empty but that doesnt work either. Why isnt the xbox loading the dashboards of the cd. Can anyone tell me. The cd's are burned correctly. Trust me on that. Has anyone else had this problem when trying to do this?

i believe you are wrong in your assumptions, the xbox still needs a dashboard to boot in order for games to go..

is your mod chip working fine still? do you even get the xbox logo when it boots?

when i redid my xbox hd, i didn't try to boot it normally (wihtout a cd or just a game, i made my own boot cd-rw)

[bold](mods, is it ok for me to post a link to a download place for a hd install boot cd?)[/bold]

here's what i do to install new hd.

    1. i run a backup in evolution x dashboard, this creates a folder on your xbox's hd in the c folder, called backup. it will contain 5 important files
    2. then i backup my xbox factory drive, both c and e folders to my pc.
    3. then i create an evolution x dashboard, hd install boot cd
    4. i install my hd (setting the jumpers on the harddrive to be set as primary/master) into the xbox
    5. boot the xbox with my custom hdinstall cd-rw
    6. choose the install hd option in evolution x
    7. then copy my c and e drives back to the new harddrive

check out my site for more info and pics, then post your ?s if you have any...

as for slayers, i have not used it yet (i'd rather do my installs the 'old school' way..)

Ok seamonkey, i'll try to explain my situation a little better. Your tutorial was one of the first i looked at. I did copy a back up folder with the evox dash and burned it to a cdrw the same way i did when i first installed the mod chip. It always worked before but for some reason the xbox is not booting the evox from the disk ever since i put in the new HD. Its as if it starts to boot it but then just goes to the error 16 screen. I understand the steps perfectly. But it just wont boot evox. Do you have any idea what is causing this?

    hmm..
perhaps your mod chip became unaligned..

also, make sure to check that you didn't forget to hook up any cables ( i did this once and it took me a few hours to finally figure it out.. hehe, sillly me..)..

is this the same boot disc you used after you installed your mod chip?

what bios do you have on your mod chip, do you have a blue or red bios so you know if that is working when it boots?

    let me know..

I am having the same problem as you with error code 16. i've modded a few xbox's for my friends and this is one tricky bastard. i can put my upgraded hd into this xbox and everything runs fine, it will boot up the evox cd and boot evox. but once i put the other drive in, the evox cd won't even boot. I tried using a program that zeroed the first 4196 sectors on the drive which worked for another hard drive, but not for this drive. Not sure if i need to try formatting the hard drive... help me out sea monkey

    hmm...

    here's what i would try....
first, hook up your drive to a pc and use FDISK or partition magic to delete all partitions on the harddrive you want to use in your xbox

then, create your own hd install cd using evolution x dashboard ( i have a evox.ini file on my site for this, and make sure you have hte backup folder with those five files and renamed the dashobard to default.xbe)
then try to install the hd by following hte menu (who knows if it will work, but wortha try!)

also, have you tried to lock the harddrive?

let me know if htat works at all..

    well hello

i've got the same problem also an xecuter chip bios version unknow. wel i am an student in electronics and computer inginering. so you could say that i know quit a bit of this subject.

so i had my xbox because of the amazing things you could do whit it. i had evox, linux, windows, divx, and lindows running on it. but when i got to far in the source code, i altert to much. and yes ( please don't ask) when i booted my xbox i saw acounter it was formatting my drive and flashing my bios.

so damm, the thing was broken and i lost al the funny things. so i send up my modchip ( it was flashed whit the wrong bios)for repair under service ofcourse. when i got the new one i placed it in my xbox. i tried to boot the thing but ofcourse my harddrive was empty. so i put in al my cd's that booted the first time but no still error code 16.

how the fusk do i get the stuf back on my hard drive. ( not whit a boot cd because they don't work.)

    a few points :

    the mod chip works
the mod chip supports hdd swap
xbox whitout a xdash but whit a modchip most boot up every game or evox or slayers cd.
whit xbox v.1.1 it doesn't matter if you use r or rw cd's.
original bios of xbox works fine ( else we won't have error codes)
connected original drive so still locked

well only one solution unlock the drive by a swap trick and connect it to an computer en boot it up. then try to run some crazy program that alows you to read alter end write files to the fatx file system of the xbox drive, and put back the original backup (don't tel you haven't got one) on the hard drive.

wel looks easyer then it is i havent got it working the swap trick fales every time.

you could unlock the drive on another way but you need a real logic analyser(and ofcouse everyone has that stuff at home, not.

so if you have any ideas please tell me. or maybe this story helps you.

    heine

what a crock of shit.. sorry but for a computer engineer u r strugglin' bro

anyways, if ur modchip is working properly and u have either a cd-rw or dvd in the dvd drive and it is an iso made properly of slayers not using xISO then it should read the disk... then u select prepare large HD and it is done that simple. if not the bios isn't working properly on the chip

thank you for that comment. for your intrest the bios version i ment was the one in my xbox. there was a litle doubt because the program i wrote. was flashing a bios. so i didn't know wich one it did. and just incase my modchip was broken i let it be repaired. and because of the error codes the bios of the xbox works fine.

the modchip i used works in at least 3 other xboxes. 2 of version 1 and one of version 1.1

for the 1.0 you need cd-r and 1.1 plays both.

(and for the "struggle" try to run some windows and linux on you system)

i have tried to zero my hd and all that b.s. and non of it works..i think when i reflashed my chip in evox when i already had the dam thing working(yes my dum ass has already modded the same xbox i am having problems with) but when i back up my files and slap in a new hd unpartioned and zero'ed out it still pops up with the error 16 bull crap...so i think that if u get this error your hd isnt being read because there isnt a bios version on your mod chip..my mod chip is an xecuter 2 lite that had 4972 or whatever version of bios on it but before i reflashed it in evox it booted up cromwell bios with the pinguen. So now i have no clue what the heck is going on. if u have any suggjestions im on yahoo as lazyasspotheaddrinker or my email is donjuanthetamp0n@hotmail.com

    First:

You cannot format your Hard disk(HD) on you PC.

    Second:

You need Slayers EVoX 2.1 on a CD-RW and boot your Xbox with it to format your HD.

    Third:

There is no easier way to do this.

when my xbox boots up, there is no logo underneath the xbox picture. i dont think my mod chip is flashed with the correct bios becuase when i first modded my xbox t had cromwell bios and i changed it to evox under the system utilitys folder it has reflash bios and i selected it(two months ago; when it was working fine with evox installed; i installed it with a cd-rw and the other cd-rw cd's in cromwell bios first) and as of today my xbox will only boot the error 16 because i had old cd-rw's that should boot up in my dvd drive but nothing will boot, even a new slayers auto installer i have that was burnt with nero correctly. What i thought was when u dont even have a hd in the xbox the xbox should always boot the cd in.. the dvd drive will not boot any cd including game cd's. i think i might need another hd with the original files- that are on factory installed xbox's. I have a hd in the xbox with nothing on it all zero'ed out 4093 at the beggining even and the xbox will not boot up the hd or bios boot up screen which should be cromwell or it should load up the slayers cd but does nothing sorry for rambling but the error 16 is a trap by microsoft for FU*&ED UP XBOX

It doesn't matter whether your hard drive is formatted or not because I used my old 60 gig hard drive where windows xp was installed. I didn't bother to format the hard drive. I just plug that hard drive in xbox and used slayer 2.1 burnt on dvd-rw. First it gave me some error since I didn't configure the hard drive to master.

I just installed a 120gig Maxtor that had the same problem. It would not be recognized by the XBox no matter what. It could be a problem with certain Maxtor drives and the XBox.

The way I fixed it was to format the drive as a single NTFS partition in Windows XP with the jumper set to either master or slave (depending on your own computer setup) and then putting it back in the XBox with the jumper set to cable select. I then used the Slayer 2.1 auto-installer to prep the drive. Before I formatted the drive as NTFS my XBox would not even boot CD-RWs or DVDs so for the longest time I thought it was a problem with my modchip. With the drive set to anything other than cable select I was getting error 9 I believe.

I tore my hair out over this one, so I hope that helps you.

I'm also using BIOS 4976.02 in case that matters.

    Good luck!

    Bill.

The Error 16 problem arising after installation of a new HDD can be resolved by inserting the original HDD, rebooting and setting the XBOX time.

Once the time is set the problems go away and the HDD is recognized as normal.
