i bought gateway GT5064 computer back in may and i wanted to update firmware for the DVD±R drive. to update firmware i have to know what drive i have and that's where i get lost...

gateway website specifications ( http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1008853/1008853nv.shtml ) for this computer state that i have TS-H552B drive [bold]but[/bold] windows device manager says that i have TS-H552D.

so the question is: should trust gateway or windows with the drive model??

    What's your firmware version?

All I could find is that your drive is a rebadged samsung-current and only firmware version is GA04. That should be yours. There's also a 552A and 552U. I didn't see anything about the 552D.

Whatever the fw version is,that's your drive. That link I posted also had a flashtool,so crossflashing that drive to the 552 with the firmware version of TS12 or BA59 is possible. Keep that in mind if you run into major issues.

thx, for word of advice, but i spent about half an hour on the phone wit gateway wodering why i hava different drive from what they advertise. nice lady from technical support explained since i bought the computer from CompUSA then it might have different hardware then what they sale directly from gateway.com.
so i guess i'm stuck with TS-H552D which is ok, not a big problem. i think i will followup and try to call CompUSA and find out if they know what they sold me.
i guess gateway thinks that if drive is Double layer 16X DVD+/-RW drive then they're all the same.

I'll attest and tell everyone that not all dvd-rw drives are the same. I've got 7,but use 4 of them strictly for burning only. All 4 of those are Benqs. The non benq drives I use as readers.

Dvd-rw drives will play their own backups. Most peeps don't notice a difference if they only play their backups on a couple of players. Playing them on a bunch of players-you'll see an incredible difference. It's the stand alone players. They can pick out all the variations between burners. The backups from the benqs, after booktyping them, will play in over 95%+ stand alone players/pc drives/game consoles/and stand alone players. Those 3 non benq drives i have: HP640c/I/O Magic 16x/and Khypermedia +8x- very low compatability rate, major pie/pif errors, and lots of coasters.

The same thing happened on my I/O magic 16x. I have 2 of them, the first I/O drive was a ligit BenQ 1620. Device manager showed my Benq 1610 and nero told me 1620. B7C9 firmware told me it was an actual 1620,and not the rebadged 1620 that would have had the fw of G7C9. It had superior compatability and I wanted 2 drives so it didn't matter who watched my backups. That 2nd I/O turned out to be a pc of crap Empa drive. You gotta watch out for some of those brands like HP and I/O Magic. You'll never know what you'll get. I purchased another Benq 1620,1640,and 1650. I avg 1 coaster out of 400+ backups. That HP burner coastered out the 2nd disc I used.Crc errors on the rest of the successful backups.
