Dear Forum members I recently downloaded some video files off Hotfile which I extracted as an AVI file. Whilst I can play them on my computer, after buring using Nero, some won't play on my Hisense TV which has an inbuilt DVD player. Whilst I get sound I get the error message "Video resolution not supported". What is strange is that I have previously burnt some other AVI files from Hotfile which play without problems but others do not. As I'm not very techical I've provded some details after downloading AVI codec regarding the files that won't play. I hope someone can assist. Thanks Andrew. The DVD player should list the maximum resolution for the Divx/XviD files that it can play back. Typically it is 720 x 576 - thus your clip being 848 wide would not play in any of my standalone units - it would have to be resized to something like 720 x 400 or 640 x 352
Thanks for your reply. Can you clarify how I would re-size the clip? Can I use something like Prism video convertor to convert the file? As I'm at a very basic level of understanding, if anyone can post a step by step guide on how to do this I would be greatful. Thanks Andrew
You can use AviDemux to resize the video. Run AviDemux and drag the video onto the window. 1 Format: AVI 2 Audio: Copy 3 Video: XviD 4 Click Filters 5 Select Resize filter 6 Set width to 640 and Round off to mult of 16, then click OK. 7 Preview and close to main menu.. 8 Click the save logo thingy on the main menu and give the new file a name. You must give it a full name, including the extension e.g. newfile.avi
Thanks Altar. As the above post was a while ago, I'm afraid I can't recall the file example I used so have tried converting another file which also won't play. I've listed the details of the file below, again using AVICodec to anlayse the file. Possibly there is a better program. Let me know if there is. 1. I dragged onto the window and it asked me if I want to build a VBR map. I accepted. 2. I selected all settings you indicated and currently waiting for the file to be converted. It's only converted 12% so I'm in for a long night. Can you explaing the 'why' behind the 'what'. I've got a few other files that won't play and they all seem different. Is there a manual for this program? Regarding the file below, the video line of info doesn't list a particular codec, so how do I know what to use? A standalone player is looking for DivX (or Xvid), that video seems to use the h264 codec. You would bring it into AviDemux and set the format as AVI, the Audio to copy and Video to XviD. I use MediaInfo or GSpot for video information. AviDemux has a guide at Doom9.
