It's a beta.. they were asking for experienced users to test the installer earlier in the week. Try the ubuntu forums.. and expect a rough ride :)

Would you have any suggestions for a more user friendly version ? Something for a noob ?

debian lenny netinstall.. ubuntu 8.04 .. pclinux.. fedora.. any that isn't a beta still in the devs testing stage.

Ubuntu is sold as "noob friendly" but really it isn't.. it's a semi broken upstream branch of debian, with some strange ideas about making it user friendly by making it a nobrainer. Think you will find that the debian lenny netinstall will just go on first time and just about everything will work.. it's only about 200mb to d/l and try... you will need proper network hardware.. a wireless POC laptop winmodem type thing will not let you install. You will need a wired connection while the installer does it's stuff. http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
pick the right one for your hardware (step 1.. know what you have in that box)... debian has better documentation than ubuntu... though they do get a bit behind and mixed up from time to time. linux-questions and debian forums are quite helpful places too. I find the ubuntu forums are full of people ignoring and being arrogant to the newbies they set out to attract.

I'm pretty mean too... welcome to the linux RTFM corner :) Google and the supplied documentation are our guiding lights.. not people telling us which buttons to press... What was I given a brain for?... oh yeah.. to use.

see people.. I can be nice... sometimes.. just once... just to make the exception that makes the rule ;)

Stupid question: did you remove the CD when it said to reboot? Once it is installed you need to remove the disc, else it will boot into the installer rather than your hard drive..... Windows probably has you conditioned to the fact that you need to reboot multiple times to complete an installation, much quicker and easier with Linux.

Ok I have downloaded DSL onto a disk and was able to get it to boot to disk. When I try to connect to the net it doesn't recognize my wireless antenna. It is realtek. I have looked for a driver for this and have no luck. Any ideas and will I be having this problem on anything I try ?

n00bs should never use the latest version of any linux distro until it has been out a few weeks... they always have a few bugs with the installer and stuff which need a skilled user to sort out and send to the bug trackers.

On 8/11 it was still classed as "beta-experienced users only" so maybe they have solved the installer problems now... I wouldn't know.. I don't use the amateurish crap.

    Now for some home truths...

EVERY LINUX DISTRO HAS IT'S OWN FORUMS... go there with your problems and n00bish questions FIRST!! because your questions.. I can guarantee.. WILL have been answered already, and even if they relate to some obscure winmodem type wireless POC and they haven't it's still THE PLACE TO ASK!!

because we don't give a flying ---k about your wireless card or your inability to install something when it has it's own site that EXPLAINS EVERYTHING!!!!!

Did you try taking the cd out after installing the O/S? I'm currently running the Ubuntu 8.10 version right now, had a minor problem during the first install due to a faulty optical drive, but runs ok.
