I downloaded WINE and im not sure how to use it exactly. If someone could guide me through running something such as AIM on Ubuntu let me know. Just be nub about it because I'm not experienced with Linux thankyou
I'm pretty sure that there isn't much to using it. All I had to do was install it and when I clicked on a .exe file it loaded up. I mean I use Kubuntu and Xubuntu but it shouldn't be any different.
im gunna give it a try and see what happens. whats the difference between kubuntu and xbuntu. do they work better than ubuntu
WTF??? why would you want to run something like AIM in linux?? there are far superior linux native applications.. try gaim and pidgin Only use wine when you have NO ALTERNATIVE, because it is buggy and a big security risk. We don't support it unless it is for very specific applications such as phone software or mp4 player loading.
lol well AIM was like an example. truly i wanted to run BF2142 but i'm not sure if thats even possible. I will check out that other IM prog u were talking about. Im new to this so bear with me. I wanna use the linux to do my normal tasks that i would do on windows without the high demand of resources that windows eats up.

While it might work ok for this particular game, to be honest, you'd be much better off buying a console if you want to do any serious gaming without running into a lot of annoyances. While I don't like either MS or Sony, I wouldn't hesitate at all to get a PS3 as my next Linux box. Sony subsidizes them to the tune of $300 or something, so even if you don't use it for games or even HD movies, you get a damn cheap PC with massive processing power. And if someone manages to hack the RSX engine to work under Linux or enables backups... well...
I have an acquaintance who rins lots of modern games.. COD4 WOW etc on a purpose built gentoo system. He compiles a specific kernel with the right drivers etc every time he wants to try a new game.. That is beyond your average user.. he's a right geek gamer.
ok to run an exe file you type wine file It will bring up the install etc. Then note how Wine creates a folder ".wine" (hidden) in your home directory. The program will install somewhere in there. You have to use the command wine to invoke the program deep inside that folder. That being said the new version of wine intergrates perfectly within ubuntu and allows you to bypass this. It associates itself with exe files so all you have to do is double click them. It even adds entries in to you applications menu under "wine". first install it. sudo aptitude-get install wine
And then it crashes.. wine supports about 20 windows programs.. Old ones. For wine to have any chance of working peoperly you need a full windows partition and a mostly full installation of windows for all the dll's etc.. May as well just dual boot windows as waste weeks and weeks on a pointless exercise. You aren't going to get games running.. if they need directX.. and what doesn't these days... you are totally shafted before you start. Is there any point digging up 2 month old threads????
soz if this has alredy been answered but i have windows vista and i have ubuntu 8.10 and i have kubuntu but when i run t inside windows to dual boot it askes me to uninstall ubuntu.is there any way i can dual boot windows vista with ubuntu and kubuntu as well using the live cd to install kubuntu
