Hey guys i was wondering if theres a way to underclock an intel P4 2,5ghz to about 2,0 to 2,2ghz ? The reason im asking is because the cpu i have is sitting on a aopen ax45-v board that only support up to 2,2ghz
If I remember correctly, the 2.2GHZ was the fastest 400mhz fsb version of the P4. Based on this, I assume the board does not support 533mhz. The 2.8GHZ running at a 400mhz fsb will be 2100mhz; and you might be able to bump up the fsb a little bit to get some more mhz. ...Just remember that you are upgrading to a very out-of-date CPU; the P4 was junk untill the 3.06ghz version came out...and even that is hopelessly outdated now.
yea im just trying to get the most out of my pc while im building a new one(ga-p35-ds3l quad core for gaming) i have both a 2,8ghz and 3,06ghz and the computer wont even start when i put them in but run awesome on the 2,0ghz from a friend laptop and the 2,5ghz i got is the only one working. the board will only support 2,4ghz with 400mhz fsb and the cpu specs as i get from cpuid are: core speed 2515.0mhz multiplier x25 bus speed 100.6mhz rated fsb 398.4mhz. The reason im asking if i can de-clock/underclock the cpu im running at the moment is because when i watch a movie it skip a lot does the same thing when i listen to music (doesnt do that when i put the 2,0ghz from laptop) and ram shouldnt be an issue as i got 1,5gb. It would be nice to be able to watch a movie or music without having it skip.Im tight on cash at the moment since im saving all i got for new build so if i can find a solution to have a more stable computer with current cpu it would be apreciated. thx a lot for your help and sorry if hard to understand french is first language
It's probably not that the CPU is too fast, it's probably overheating or stressing the motherboard too much. Use better thermal paste with the CPU cooler, such as Arctic Silver V (Remember to remove the old paste first)
Im using artic silver v thermal grease and with 5 80mm intake and 1 120mm exhaust fan i dont think cooling is an issue it may be tho. Any clue to solve this helps me a lot and if my only choice is another cpu my local shop have a 1,6ghz for cheap would even that be better than the 2,5ghz im running at the moment ? thx for the help guys
seem to be running cooler that way and yes bios update have been done windows update have been done,the board support up to 2,4ghz with 400mhz fsb which is why im looking into a way to underclock the 2,5ghz
It's not the clock speed, it's the actual processor itself it doesn't support, as faster chips use slightly different internal designs. The 2.5Ghz CPU won't be compatible no matter what speed you actually run it at.

No problem, the Q9650 is a stunning CPU. Don't go mad with overclocking it though, The P35-DS3L doesn't have especially strong voltage regulators.
Yay i finally got upgrade for my PC got a 3,4ghz cpu a 512mb video card 2,5gb of ram reformated to XP Pro defrag all my drive and change my old 20gb harddrive for a brand new 40gb.So far everything works awesome but i have the same problem music skip like a scratch cd and same goes for movie anyone has an idea on what the problem could be ?? thx again for the help
A 3.4Ghz CPU? Given that no 3.4Ghz stock CPUs have been made for over two years it worries me what you've bought. Also, 2.5GB of RAM? What? Also, a 40GB HDD? Given the price of HDDs up to about 200GB in size, I'm guessing you bought one second hand, else you could have got a 120GB one for almost the same price.
Second hand but still works it only cost me 20$ in gas to have better than what i had before and the 40gb has windows on it so no big harddrive is needed but the problem is still there so im starting to think the board might be the problem.heres the spec if it help,2 western digital 40gb harddrive on 80pin ide cable 2 western digital 250gb on sata,1gb kingston ddr pc2700 3x512 kingston ddr pc2700,geforce 7600gt 512mb video card 5.1 sound card and a 3,4ghz cpu.All that is sitting in an intel D865GLC board powered by a 500w coolmax power supply.ive been looking around to solve this problem since march im on my third board first one was an aopen ax45-v then got a micro-star k8ngm2(which doesnt power on anymore but little green light on the board is on). i would appreciate if the problem could stop somehow so i can enjoy watching movie or listen to music again Sorry for the long text im just trying to enjoy my computer once again thx all for the reply
lol does the job tho considering when i put my buddy 350w nothing happen so i needed something better and cheap and at 30$cdn it was the best i could find at the time......should of went with that 650 thermaltake they had for an extra 20$
