I have a pioneer 107d with patched firmware 1.16 and have been burning dvds for a couple of months using princo blanks with no problem. Recently I started using Shintaro dvd-rw disks 5 of them. after using them for between 6 and 8 times each they are all unusable, and DVD Decrypter says it can't read the VTOC, whilst Nero will not erase the disc and says it is unwritable. They all worked fine at the beginning. Is this a hardware problem with my burner or the blanks, any suggestions.
I'd say its the disc's. Personally I dislike Princos disc's, the dvd-+r's are alright for data and maybe mp3's, but that's it. And the Rewrites are just terrible. I'd go out and get some quality Rewrties if you want to use them over and over again. Cheers. _X_X_X_X_X_[small]AKA: TRHR. Yes, you should not use DVD-RW because you will encounter a lot of problems with them. I currently use DVD-R's and have no problem at all. Also, for the problem you have stated, maybe the DVD's are corrupt. I am not really sure because I have never really used a DVD-RW!
Oh, by the way, burelli, Shintaro discs are actually Princo Disc's too! Are you an Aussie, if you're buying Shintaro disc? If you are, Welcome, there's a few of us around. Hehe
A lot of cheap rewritables wear out much sooner than they're supposed to. Other than that, the only difference in using them vs. regular -R or +R is player compatability. You might want to check out this thread for recommendations: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/91323
Yes I am an Aussie. i didn't know that Shintaro were Princo. I have used 100-150 princo dvd-r with very few problems. I am using the dvd-rw to watch a movie then I can overwrite it so I don't end up with dozens of movies. Yes iknow I can throw them out. Is there any way to recreate the VTOC? Is this problem likely to recur on different dvd-rw. I did find on another forum that this could happen but not how to fix it?
We have another Aussie here named Cozza who swears by Princo's too, he's never had a problem with them (the dvd-r's anyway). But for me they just don't work all the time, they seem to be very touchy with what dvd player they'll play in plus they can degrade over time. A different brand of DVD-RW will sort out the problem for you, I'd recommend buying some Ritek's or Taiyo Yudens over the net, but if you want to buy locally, buy some Verbatim ones. As for fixing those DVD-rw's I don't know mate, sorry. And Jeff, if you want, come say Hi in the Afterdawn IRC Channel, there's some info in my signature. Cheers.
Not a problem. Cozza and I are the resident Aussie's in the Afterdawn IRC channel, so come on in oneday. :-D
As for a recommendation, I use the Riteks. I got a half-dozen about 1-`/2 years ago, and I am in the low hundreds right now on re-recording.
