I am currently using AOL dialup as my ISP. When I first got my new PC (about 3 months ago) I connected at 55.0 kb/s. Now, I average 33.6 kb/s. I understand that it has slowed down because of the programs running on my PC, so my max is 52.0 kb/s. The problem is this: When I connect at 45.5, 33.6, 31.2, or 28.8(usually retry) everything runs to my expectations. But, when I connect at [bold]44.4[/bold] it is ridiculous! I cannot connect to anything but Fireofox and it's as bad as 14.4. When I try to connect to MSN Messenger it gives me the Trouble Shoot window. I run it, get to the DNS test and it states: "cannot resolve ip". Anyone know how I can fix this or speed it up past 44.4?
do you have a router??also this is broadband were talking about not dial up right...this is slow for broadband if it is like the lite version...i dont know exactly what the problem could be that is slowing down your connection... if this is a dial up connection then that could be the problem in itself.....
might be your phone lines either in the house or outside of house. try the computer at friend's place if on same street(dosen't have to be using aol) to see if problem follows or not.
Does this happen on a regular basis. Can you disconnect and then connect at a different speed and it works ok or is it slow all of the time? Are there any malware programs running in the background hogging the connection? Try HiJackThis to check. It may be a cable problem as ddp suggests. Is your modem plugged into the master socket for the phone line or are you using an extension cable? If you are then try plugging directly into the master or try a fresh extension and see if that improves matters also check the modem to socket lead.
i suggested your street as it uses 1 line to feed all the houses. try another street that a friend lives on.
pyffy, No, it doesn't happen all the time, but it happens more often than not. No malware. Direct plug. Not sure how to do that. I will try a another location tomorrow, I forgot my laptop.
Was just wondering if the cable you use to connect the modem to the wall socket was intact or showing signs of wear. Possibly a loose wire inside. However I think ddp's suggestion of a new location is favourite, as this will confirm or rule out a bad feed from the phone company on your street.
pyffy, No, I started with a cable that was missing it's lock-in clip, this is when I was connecting at 52.0. It was like 20' long so I got myself a new one. Today I tried it at another location (about 7 miles from current) and I connected at 44.0 first time. It did good the whole time. [bold]But[/bold], like I said in a previous post it does work at my location [bold]sometimes[/bold], for example, right now! I am connected at 44.0 and it's a little slow for what I expect but it isn't pinged completely. Any suggestions?
Move streets perhaps , seriously though. I think as ddp suggests, this is a telephone company problem. When demand is high on your street, during peak evening hours, the line quality degrades which may mean that data gets corrupted and has to be sent again and again before a clear version comes through. This of course slows down transmission times. Sometimes, if it is a very poor line, transmission won't work at all as you have found out. Is the line very crackly at these slow times? It may be worth contacting the telephone company and see if there is anything they can do.
I don't understand your use of "crackly". Anyway, the problem seems to have gone away. My free trial of AOL ran out a couple days ago, so I switch to NetZero. I've noticed I hit above 44.0 more often now. But, when I do hit 44.0 everything is perfect. The problem I assume was because of call waiting. I didn't set it to dial *70 before dialing the number. Doing this seems to fix it, alot. Still would like to know if I did call my phone company would they replace my phone lines coming into my house free of charge? Thanks for the help.
Ok, I'm bringing this back into disscusion for a couple of reasons. 1. I called my phone company, a repair guy finally showed up at my house 3 1/2 weeks later. He told me he "found nothing wrong with my lines". He did a few tests with his meters and nothing seemed to be wrong. 2. This problem is really getting to me! Everything that I said in the first post still applies today with a few other problems. One of them being I cannot change [bold]any[/bold] settings of my modem (Motorola SM56). I try to change some of the "modem hold on" settings such as call wating, ect. When I close the properties window and re-open it I find my settings have been reset to default. Also, as stated in the first post, when I connect at 44000 BPS it is ridicously slow. So, I want to set "Maximum Port Speed" to 38600 but, when I do it still connects at 44000 [bold]every[/bold] time. So, you may ask, "why not change it to connect at a faster speed?" Well, when I connect at 45500 (happens sometimes) it's worse than 44000. My questions: Why can I not change any settings? Why, if my phone lines have no problems, is it so slow when I connect at speeds above 33600? Is there a way to [bold]only[/bold] connect at 33600?
check when on the net for outgoing packets compared to incoming packets. outgoing should be 10% of incoming. had that with a customer with win2k & 56k modem connecting around 45k. windows was infested with spyware. had to reload from scratch to solve problem.
Connected at 33.6 after 7 minutes of being online here are the results: Sent - about 152,000 bytes Recieved - about 1,300,000 bytes Sent Erros - 0 Recieved Errors - 6 Connected at 44.0 after 7 minutes of being online here are the results: Sent - about 119,000 bytes Recieved - about 357,000 bytes Sent Errors - 0 Recieved Errors - 25 Both tests were conducted under normal activity. For the full 7 minutes I was always loading a web page. Noticing many more errors when connected at 44.0. I know for a fact I am clean of any viruses, spyware, ect.
This is really begining to piss me off! Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can to stop this madness?
