Isn't purely down to firmware. Most of the work is done by a chip. Basically you need to buy a new player. Only exception would be where a player used an MPEG-4 capable chip with a firmware limiting it to MPEG-2/DVD only. Can't think of such an example and it certainly wouldn't be the case with an older (pre integrated MPEG-1/2/4 chipsets) player.
