hey everyone I have recently been trying to find out how to install an 80GB hard drive in my xbox and I'm having some trouble. I found this guide: http://www.biline.ca/xbox_uxe_hd.htm Sounded easy enough to try but it says some programs are needed to get this thing started. Well I cannot find the program Configmagic 1.6 final at the links he gave. I have tried looking on the internet but I thought I would ask here also incase someone could point me to it or email it to me (PM if you have info). Or.... is there another way to install this hard drive without having to download these programs? Any info is appreciated. Thanks a lot. In the meantime the search continues...
i did the same thing, put in an 80gig WD hdd and here's the page i used and it worked perfect..hope it helps ya out. http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox.shtml later add
Hey thanks for the reply I tried following the hard drive portion of the guide you sent to me http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox2.shtml and I'm having some difficulty getting this all started. NOw the first part of the guide that I posted there I didn't follow. To back up my eeprom I did it this way: in my evox menu there is a backup option which I selected. Then on my c:\backup folder on the xbox I have the eeprom file with some others... bios.bin, disk.bin, eeprom.bin, hddinfo.txt, hddkey.bin I copied the eeprom.bin only to the folder that the guide told me to. Then I followed the rest of what that guide said to do except the ISO that was created was 1GB (after I deleted all the skins from my c so I burned it to a DVD instead of a CD thinking this wouldn't make a difference. Now when I booted the cd with the 80GB hard drive attached I looked at the steps for xboxhd that the guide mentions # Press 1 (Boot VGA Console with Xbox-Drive Utilities (default)) and hit enter. (so far so good) # Type xboxhd and hit enter (typed this and got the following msg) "No disk drive found on dev/hda/ (primary master)! Shotdown, connect a drive and reboot" I can't get to the next steps. The very first time I tried this and I wasn't paying enough attention so I missed that. I typed yes anyway and then my screen had a bunch of letter y going down the left side of the screen. I left this for 40 mins thinking it was doing whatever it needed but I'm assuming nothing happened. I reset my computer after that time and that's when I started paying more attention and then I got the above msg that I just wrote. You know what could be going on? I thought it was my computer wasn't detecting the hard drive as the master drive but all I did was unhook the IDE cable from my original drives and the end of the cable that's plugged into my master computer hdd i put in the drive i want to install in my xbox. And I'm sure the jumper on this 80GB hard drive is in the position for master. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to plug the hard drive into the primary spot of the IDE cable that my cdroms are plugged into? I don't understand. I should've known this was going to turn into a difficult situation!
Hello this is a follow up to my last post. I managed to fix the problem. I plugged my hdd into the primary IDE cable (originally it was attached to my cdrom which was the primary device and my dvd writer was the secondary). I just removed my cdrom and plugged the hdd into that. I was able to then format the drive. However something else went wrong. During the formatting process at one point it asked me to create an F drive or something like that. The above guide mentioned nothing about enabling the f drive so I said no to it. I thought that if I said yes it was going to get rid of the data that was originally on my e drive. Well afterwards I FTP'd to my xbox and was checking out the size of the drives. On the c: and e: I have about 4 GB each. F and some other drives I don't see any space but on the X: and Z: It says I have something like 78GB available. So I wanted to try and copy a game from the xbox DVDROM to the X:. I have DVD2Xbox on my system and I tried using that but it would only allow me to copy to the C: or E:. I didn't see anything in there for an X: So what is it I need to do now in order to take advantage of this 78GB? Do I need to redo the process of formatting the drive and enable f: this time? Or can I somehow repoint all my apps on here to look at the x: instead? Thanks for all the help...I'm almost done!
sounds like your getting closer..you need the f drive to copy your games to. i would try to reformat and then enable the f drive, i had to reformat the drive a couple times to get mine to work. later add
Ok I reformatted the damn drive and now everything seems to be ok. I used that DVD2xbox to copy a game to the f: and it went smoothly. Now from my evox menu in the past I would select "Play Games from Harddrive" and it would load anything I put on the e:. I tried that now in hopes it would load the game I just copied to the F: but it showed up with nothing. So what do I do now to get this to play games from the f:? is there a setting I need to change somewhere? Or did I completely screw this hard drive up?
what game are you coping to you hard drive? i have had only one so far that would not show up in the evox "play game from hdd" tab and that was brute force. i am still tring to get that part figured out. other then that you could try to copy halo2,or metal of honor,if ya have them, i got both them games and about 6 more on there that play perfect. when you copy the games to the f drive is it the one that has f:games? thats the one i put them in. later add
No there was a line I had to edit in the evox.ini file under the section titled "play games from harddrive". It was pointed to e:\games. I just added f:\games and all of them showed up. Looks like I'm all done. I copied about 4 or 5 games to the hdd and they're all there. The only problem I experienced now is I got Samurai Shodown 5 on there and it freezes at the loading screen. I don't think that's anything I did though. I think it's just that it's one of those games that will not play on the hdd easily. I'm looking that up right now. Thanks for the help. One more question...now that I have this 80GB 7200 rpm drive in my xbox isn't this potentially going to cause overheating? Is there anything I should do to help cool this thing down?
glad to here ya got it going, i had the same problem with one of my kid's game freezinf on the loading screen and all i had to do was go into the cache folder and clear it out. dont delete the folder just clear it out and then reboot and it should work. as for overheating i dont think and 80gig will give off that much heat but if you want to cruz over to http://www.llamma.com/ and thenthe xbox page and then to the parts in stock on the upper left side of the screen and pick up yourself a fan mod connector, i put one in the xbox i softmodded and it works like a charm.. glad to help ya out and enjoy your modded xbox.. later add
what gets stored in the cache folder? i've tried 2 of these games on my new hard drive and both freeze. i re downloaded them twice but the same thing happens. these same games are on my bros' xbox and they work
im not really for sure what the cache folder does but when i was haveing that same problem with games freezing on startup i was told to delete the files in the cache folder and then they should work, i tried that and then they wroked percect. some of the other members say that it is a good idea to delete them files every once in awhile. so i keep my cleaned out about once every 2 weeks. later add
