I have done searches for this problem and can not find a answer so I apologize if it has already been talked about. I have an Albatron Intel 865PE/PE Pro motherboard and I want to update the drivers so I can use the USB 2.0. The thing is I do not want to install a service pack from Microsoft. I do not like those things. The only thing that they seem to do is slow down a computer. My question is can I get the driver somewhere else? Thank you.
USB 2.0 isnt just a driver its a complete different hardware chip. you cant upgrade from USB1 to USB2.0 it just doesnt work like that also microsoft service packs are very usefull as they prevent a lot of malicious wares from accessing your computer. if it wasnt for service packs we would all still have the "messenger" service running on our computers and all the hackers in the world would be screwing us with back orrifice
I understand that USB 2.0 is a hardware chip. When I installed the board and put the install cd in, an option on it was USB 2.0. When I click on it, the message said "USB 2.0 Drivers for Win 9X/ME. Win XP users can install SP1 for USB 2.0 devices. Win 2000 users can update the USB 2.0 drivers at Microsoft Website." So as far as I can tell I just need the drivers. I do not do that much internet use and networking. I do most of my computer use offline and I have a anti-virus and a firewall to help protect my computer. I know this is not the best protection but so far I have not been infected too bad. In the past I have not had good luck with service packs and it is nothing against Microsoft, but I choose not to use SP1 or SP2. I try to keep my computer as basic as possible. When I flatten my PC, which is every 6 months or so, until I install the MOBO drivers, I only have USB 1.1. I only get USB2 with a driver update. I think there is a misunderstanding happening here. Never heard of USB2 needing a different hardware chip! Go figure that one out!
When I put in a new USB2 card to update from USB1 I had to run the CD that came with it to install the new drivers for USB2. (It's new hardware and software that gets installed) IMHO not updating with SP1 and SP2 is a major mistake and can leave your computer wide open to attacks. As well as greatly improved security features, when installed correctly the Service Packs updated and improved existing features. There were several compatibility problems when the SP's originally came out but Micro$oft and software makers released patches which fixed the problems so there should be no degradation of your computer's performance.
@ pulsar the difference between USB 2 and USB one is more than just a driver. you cant just get a motherboard from 1995 with a USB slot on and update the drivers to make it USB 2.0. the hardware was redesigned for a higher data transfer rate. the reason that you are supplied with USB 2 drivers when you purchase a motherboard is incase you have an old operating system like windows 98 which was created before USB 2 was released. windows XP doesnt require additional drivers in order for it to work with USB 2.0 as it has them built in
OK, my MOBO needs the drivers to enable USB2. It's only a couple of years old. (MSI K72n Delta) My XP pro does not, & never has installed USB2 drivers for my MOBO! I have flattened on a regular basis. What's happening there then?
ive never had to install the USB 2 drivers on any computer ive ever setup with windows XPSP2 (and belive me ive done quite a lot of them) ... maybe its just your motherboard if its sp1 youve been installing then that could be why aswell i suppose
@ niners78 Check in Device manager ,you must have the "Enhanced" USB controller ! That is the control that decides if the device you attach to your PC will perform at Full speed(USB1) or High Speed(USB2). Your motherboard is fairly recent one and it should have this controller . You will also see others USB controllers in Device Manager -- they are there to maintain backward compatibility with older USB1 devices. Reading your original post -- I fail to see what problems you are having -- do you mean that you are not getting USB2 devices recognized by your Operating system ? If that is so , all you need to do is to refresh the chipset drivers for your motherboard. Regards !
@ Jeanc1 I looked in the Device manager and there is a USB Controller under the "Other devices" tab with a yellow ? and a ! on it. I do see the other USB ports under the USB tab. They all look fine. Yes, you are correct that I can not get USB2 devices to recognize. I.E. If I plug an I-Pod into the usb I get the message talking about "This is not a hi-speed port" or something like that. You say that I can refresh the chipset for my motherboard. How do I do that? Thank you for your input.
In Device Manager -- you should see : Universal Serial Bus Controllers If you click the + sign you should see as many controllers as you have USB ports on your PC BUT you should also have one that says :- USB Enhanced Host Controller =================================================== That last one is the controller that will activate whatever port you are using IF you plugin a USB2 device. =================================================== The yellow ? indicates you have a problem ! -- Right click it, select uninstall-- answer yes or OK -- then reboot your PC to get Windows to re-install! Check again after in Device Manager if the problem has gone ! and If this was your Enhanced Host Controller, you are done if its now OK. ==================================================== The chipset drivers for your board are on the manufacturer website ; look for your board number in the Mainboard Menu on Left here: - http://www.albatron.com.tw/english/service/Download.asp Have a great evening !
USB2 can be up to 40 times faster than USB 1.1 . You should just get a usb v2 pci card and be done with it. Here is a usb 2 pci card for $9. LOL I think I would get a better one though. Newegg is an excellent company to buy from. I just purchased a PCI USB V2 / 1394 card. here is the link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815104216 Also If you do get usb2 and you have xp... make sure you install SP2, Also if you get usb2 and you have a usb v1 or v1.1 device it will not make that device any faster, the device must be v2 also.
for usb2 to work in xp than you have to install either sp1 or sp2 than load the usb2 driver to get "enhanced usb controller" to work.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE USB V2 HARDWARE, EITHER ON THE MAINBOARD OR A PCI CARD. SP2 only makes it so you do not have to load ant additional drivers for usb2 on mainboards, in most cases. SP2 also adds some functionality for usb v2. go here , it is all explained http://www.usbman.com/
