I may be an idiot, but how do I simply copy files, ie JPEG, MP3 etc. to a DVD-R as a backup?

Everything I have tried has failed.

To further educate you, Nero can aslo burn Cds (both audio and data). It's a very well respected product, although some people don't like it.

Thanks very much for the advice .. I succesfully burned a DVD .. not a samll feet for a man of limited computer knowledge.... One more question it seemed kind of slow is it typidcally a slow process? It only seemed to allow me to burn at 1x?

Yes, this is quite typical, (it should take about 1hr, perhaps a bit less) there are a few X2 discs starting to appear on the market, but they cost more.

So if I understand correctly , it's the disc that determines the burning speed not the computer?

That's right. The new discs are 4x but the standard is 2x. And the fact the recorders at the moment only record up to this.
