I want to burn my avi video files to cd to free up space on my computer. I did it once some time ago and now I am having trouble. This is SO frustrating! I'm only burning them to free up space on my computer, so I can access them with the disk when I need them for a project. I have Nero smart start, express and nero burning rom and I did it once, and I'm at a loss. I've tried to select different options (data file cd, video file cd, in Nero), but nothing is working. After I tried selecting several different options in Nero and actually burn. It says the burn is successful. But when I pop the cd into the tray, (which is E for me), the E is not coming up with the cd label/name and when I click it, it's saying drive isn't "ready". Important to note that when I put in the old cd I burned of avi video I made long ago, the name comes up on the E drive, it registers right away, I can open it, and there are all the files I burned and they play perfectly. Can't seem to repeat the steps I used the do this once before. Frustrating! any info/comments would be appreciated.

My advice would be not to mess with Nero Start Smart and just use Nero Burning Rom. When the "New Compilation" wizard comes up, if there's a
drop down on the top left(if you have a DVD burner if not it won't be there) select CD. Then the top icon should say CD-ROM(ISO). Select
that. Under Multi-session select "no mutlisession". On the Burn tab
select your speed and check "finalize CD". Now click the New button.
Drag and drop all the files you want to put on the disc to the center pane with the Left Mouse Button(for some reason Nero doesn't like right mouse button drag sometimes and sometimes it does.. weird program.. but left mouse button drag always works.. when Nero doesn't crash that is). Then click the disc image with the red flame on it on the Toolbar. The compilation wizard comes up again and just click "Write". You should get a finalized data CD that will show up in explorer and you should be able to read the names of the video files, copy them to HD etc..

I always use Nero Burning Rom. All the other Nero Gizmos with dialogs
that trap you at each step try to do your thinking for you and it's just too frustrating trying to remember what page of the dialog and under what button all the options are hidden. With Nero Burning Rom
after a few uses you know where the stuff is. That wizard gives a consistent interface(well, for Nero anyway.)

Thanks for your reply. Followed your steps. When the window first came up to 'add' files, none of my avi video clips appeared. (They were not listed under the "supported compilations, etc. selection). It was only when I switched the selection on bottom to "show all files" did my movies appear, to make a selection. I did add one avi video. I did burn and the burn itself stated successful. However, when I put it into "E" drive, it again said not ready. Waited, nothing. I tried putting it back into the "F" cd burner and it came up labeled as "audio cd" "track 01". Although at least I could see something this time, this will not open up or play in my media player. There is something I'm missing here, as I did this before, no prob, and that other burning session could be read on my main "E" drive, listed each avi video name, and they all had the little media player icon next to each name, and played in media player. Very frustrating! Appreciate your help, though, and I will just keep trying! thanks.

I don't know what you are talking about with "supported compilations".
When you create a data CD you just drag and drop files from explorer onto the center pane of Nero Burning Rom. Sounds like you are not using Nero Burning Rom. I don't use Nero Express or Nero Start Smart or any of that so I can't help you.

Maybe someone else who favors those user interfaces will take a shot at it. As far as I can tell you're making something very simple into something very difficult because you're accessing Nero through these other front ends. Try using this program
    "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\nero.exe"

i think i can see what's happening here.. i'm with MilesAhead, we need to keep things simple. ...let's start with the proverbial Nero log and try and unravel what you've done here... pls post LAST section of your Nero log, it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. Each section in the logfile is separated by something like "======= nero History =======" or similar so we want just the LAST section of log...

Thanks for your input, Creaky and MilesAhed. I did have SOME success. I agree I was making this more difficult than necessary. I bypassed the Smartstart and Nero Express and opened Burning Rom directly. Did drag and drop an avi file with no problem. Burn stated successful. Reinserted cd into my main cd drive and there it was! Problem was when I opened it in Media Player, both the video and sound were 'skippy'. Burned at 4x using Memorex CD-RW. Success was shortlived though, as I tried to repeat the process, burn stated successful, took it out of the burner, reinserted cd into E tray, it kept saying 'device not accessible. Drive not ready'. First time successful, but with poor video. Second time, E drive not recognizing. Should I being restarting the computer after a burning session? Not sure how that would help, but just asked.

    Hello All,
Just an update to my dilema. This is very odd to me. I have previously burned my avi videos to a Memorex cd-rw. Label was printed 1x-4x. Cd was burned at 4x. I noticed that the new package of Memorex cd's that I am using now (and having so much trouble showing up on my E drive) has a label that says 4x. Not 1x-4x, just 4x. Now, I wouldn't think that would really matter, as I have always burned at 4x. Just for testing, I found an old Memorex cd, 1x-4x, and burned it. The burn was successful and the label showed right up on my E drive! Kind of strange. If one is burning at 4x, I don't see there would be any difference between a 1x-4x cd and a 4x cd. Is it possible that the new 4x package of Memorex could be defective? My burning all states successful, but the E drive is not recognizing the cd. Could all this aggravation be because of a media issue? I will do further testing. Appreciate your input and patience. Comments?
