I installed some extra stuff off the disks for my SuSE 10.1 GNOME computer, one of the things was wine, I go into the terminal, and type 'wine', it comes up with a whole heap of stuff, and after a while you see 'Usage: blah blah'
I type in 'wine program.exe' And I get a whole heap of junk, and then a new line, nothing happens. How do i get wine to work?
P.S. I am not the root user

You type winecfg to configure and run wine. And why did you add your not root. Always Always Always be root if your configuring a program or running a program to get full features.

Always Always Always remember [bold]NOT[/bold] to use root anything but updating / configuring system. Honestly, wine doesn't need root rights to run, so don't run it as a root.

Wine isn't perfect. There are only a few applications which will run flawless on a out-of-the-box wine installation. You can look from wine applications database if someone have been able to run the software u want to run. http://appdb.winehq.org/

Dude, why does it matter if you run it as root anyway. I run everything in root as you get all the privileges and when I don't need it I log off. I mean really it won't hurt anything unless you think it is a security vulnerability. And it won't hurt to learn and get in the habbit of running as root. And use said only use root when updating/configuring system, well Wine is manipulating system files and letting to run exe progs on your sys.

And this thread is over a month old, why bring this up, as he didn't even reply to this thread again.

it's always seen as very bad practice to use root unnecessarily; i personally have always used root as my personal everyday login (my job requires it anyway), and am always VERY careful what i do before i do it (and have never come a cropper that hasn't been fixable). I think the most dangerous mistake i ever made was to move an entire Production directory structure somewhere by mistake; but i was able to move it back quickly and without incident. However as i say it's highly frowned upon to use root unnecessarily; and you don't run processes as root when a normal user's privilege will suffice.

Also never forget it's effortless to destroy a system via the simple 'rm -r' command - imagine typing that in the wrong place and being escorted out the door to the dole office

I meant configuring not always haveing root on. Like when you are first configuring a program. And when its home use I don't think there would be anyworth of anybody hacking. Maybe Im wrong cause I use Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses a "Super User" so you basically always have to be it to run a program..maybe I am so used to doing that since I don't have a root user

Creaky, i think you'll find most sysadmins that actually use their brains will make sure you can't use rm -r in vital areas... ;-)

indeed, was thinking (in horror) of any companies out there who allow unrestricted root access to people that should'nt have it.

ouch!. well my firm gave me unrestricted root access back when i was a Unix noob, but with my noobness came great restraint and a huge respect for the dangers inherent in such noob territory (almost sounds like a Star Wars line); if i didn't know what something meant inside out i didn't allow fingers near keyboard. That was some years ago and needless to say us Admins guard our root access fiercely from non-Admin human-types :p

Well, let me tell you this, it took me 10 minutes of walking around to find a WiFi access point, 20 minutes to break the WEP, and 5 more minutes to find an exploit that granted me a shell with root access...
And this was me taking my time 'cause i had all day to do it.
This company was like "yeah, acording to our IT firm our security is tight, but we'd like a second opinion..."
What a f*cking laugh that was.
I was told to call the CO of that company once i had my findings..
The poor man was so shocked he fired half the IT staff on the spot.

OOo i can see you now, attempting to haxor me with your leet skiddie scripts... :/ me thinks not me dear friend.. also Yes there may be a whole DVD backup section, but ripping em and copying isnt backing up really is it now.. i mean come on its just said to keep it above board... you are copy dvd's and your breakin the law... i just hope someone breaks you freakin legs dipsh*t

@rundata - it's obvious you don't like it here so i'll make easy on you and the genuine 'noobs' who actually come here for help.

As for Fiend, he knows his stuff; you seem to just come here to wind people up or prove something; neither of which is helpful around here.

edit- now the thread(s) can get back on track...
