I can't remember if I posted about this before as I have been to so many places trying to get help, so please forgive if I am repeating. Transferring VHS tapes, personal videos, not movies so no protection probs. Tried doing it from VCR to DVD Recorder, problems when there was a glitch in tape, would lose entire DVD disk, message disc error. Now doing it using VCR attached to computer via external equipment, currently Dazzle Digital Video Creator 80 and Studio software that came with it. Works pretty good as long as no glitches within the vhs tape, but have a few tapes with glitches in them and when they happen the video continues, but no audio. Tried diff software, windvd creator, same prob. Any suggestions how to overcome this. I tried ATI external hardware only to find out it was not compatible with XP Media Center, plus the support is lousy. I realize the end product, meaning the captured VHS tape, will only be as good as the original, and that is OK, just need to find a way to get it all on puter. I am hoping that someone knows of some software or hardware that is more forgiving of the glitches. (Glitches meaning, rolling of tape, zigzag spots, seconds between some scens due to adding something new, etc.) I have tried watching tape, marking time, but sometimes the glitch is actually so quick I miss it, plus I really do not want to have to watch all these tapes half dozen times. Any help greatly appreciated
Well the only way to elinate the Glitches in the Tape is to use a TBC (Time Based Corrector) which is about a $500 Unit which would also be a waste to use with such a Crappy Capture device as the DVC80... Some capture devices Have Built in Line TBC"s Like the Canopus ADVC-300 but that is also a $450 Device.... Most Regular Capture Cards do not Have Problems with Glitches in the VHS Tape accept it Might drop a Couple Frames were the Glitch is but won"t Ruin the Whole Capture.... I would suggest that you Get a Better Capture card (Not a USB one)..You can get one that is WAY better than the DVC80 and will capture at 400% Higher Resolution for about $25 on E-bay but you are better off investing a few Bucks and getting a Good Card.... Good luck
Thanks for the answer. I do not mind paying more for a good card, as I will be copying other VHS tapes that are in better conditon than these, plus I have dozens of VHS movies I want to eventually convert to disc, so I will get my money's worth. On the other hand, I am on a bit of a limited budget so a card upwards of $200.00 might be a bit more than I can afford right now. You say I might find something on EBay, any suggestions as to brand of card, and same question if I buy at reg store, or is there a good online source. I hope I am not asking questions that are not allowed to be answered here. I have only dealt with EBay one time and bought from someone that came highly recommended, and all went well. Suggestions are always welcome, and thanks again.
Hi, Well if your Goal is to Transfer VHS to DVD then it would Probably be best to get a Hardware Mpeg-2 encoder Card Like the "Hauppague WinTV PVR 150/250" or a "Tul Theater 550" both of which use an Onboard Hardware encoder Chip to Compress the Video signal directly to Mpeg-2/DVD format and Transfers it to your PC... These Files would then simply have to be authored to DVD with a DVD authoring program without the need to re-encode the files so there is No quality loss between the Files you Capture and what goes on to DVD...There also is no Strain on your CPU when captureing so you can do other things with your PC while Captureing Video.... These Cards are Generally under $100 and you can edit the Captured files useing any Native Mpeg editor like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" and the Cards also Come with a Built in TV Tuner so you can Record and watch TV by Connecting the Antennae or a Cable TV input into the Card... The next Best step up would be to Get a Capture device Like the Canopus ADVC-110($250) or the Canopus ADVC-300($450) which are The Top of the Line in Consumer Analogue to Digital converters and produce amazeing Quality even better than the Source when useing the ADVC-300 because it has Digital Hardware Image Filters.... Cheers
