Some AVI video have permanent subtitles burned onto them - you play the AVI and you see the subtitles- whether you want to or not. It's possible to download a subtitle for a particular movie from a site. http://divxsubtitles.net/page_subtitleinformation.php?ID=61385 The way it works is, the AVI files name and the name of the subtitle file are the same (except for the file extension), viz: myfilm.avi myfilm.srt Both files are burned to a DVD data disk (not authored as a DVD movie) and your standalone, DivX compatible, player will use the subtitles (when you turn them on with the remote). The other way is to convert the AVI file to a DVD and add subtitles. This is more involved than simply burning the AVI and sub file to a DVD disk.
