Yes, i gess You need to have the original (VHS or DVD), and you shouldn't make movie downloads (or buy them), thats illegal too.

It probably is illegal under current law, though I'm not sure anyone has tested this. The concept of protecting your investment is a bulwark of a free, capitalist society - our economy would go down the toilet permanently without legal means of protecting one's assets and investments - so I cannot see any law interfering with that withstanding any significant legal test. But, of course, if you got caught, you might have to be the one paying to argue that before a court of law in order for the precedent to be settled.
Put simply, you need to own whatever you wanna mess about with for your own pleasure... is that right? Copying something you don't own, for yourself/personal use is illegal Showing something you own, for none personal use, is illegal! Everything is illegal!
