So I am planning on getting a good video card... I've mainly been comparing the 5750 and 4850... 5750 gets the 5000 series upgrades but only a 128 bit bus while the 4850 is a solid card and proven to work good.

I am not a hardcore gamer, and my max res is 1680x1050 so I don't need something amazing.

So what do you guys think is the best bang for buck video card for under $200?

Just so you know, I'm in Canada, and price needs to be after taxes/delivery.

    Thanks for help.

can't you just go overboard a little and grab the 5770? if you cant i suggest you get the 4850 unless you really want directx 11, in that case go grab the 5750..

I'm trying to stick to $150 or so but willing to push to $200 max to get something good... I'm trying to steer clear from "if you can go a little over get this.." cause I might be tempted to go a little over that and get more.
So basically... performance wise, 4850 is about the same as 5750? cause the 4850 is cheaper. And no, DX11 is of no concern to me. I use dual boot XP/W7 but I haven't really made the switch to W7 yet even... I'm stubborn... XP has treated me fine and Vista was a nightmare (tried at launch and a few months later but found it wasn't for me).

I should also mention I'm still (for the moment) using a 5000+ BE X2 so I'll likely be bottle-necked by the CPU... But a Phenom 955 is in the works.

But yea, if not needing DX11 support and not needing massive resolutions on all the latest games... The 4850 likely the best choice? But I also want a card thats going to be a medium gamer for about 2 years... Does the 4850 have enough power to keep it competitive that long? And for reference... I just got rid of a HIS 4670 IceQ Turbo... But its just not doing it for me anymore...

Something unmentioned is what your mobo can handle. What is the best slot you can fit into?

Vista turned out to be a great OS, but it was a nightmare for driver support(although I believe this was mainly on OEM pcs) and to top it off most pcs running vista around the launch time werent designed to handle it properly.

As for video cards, If you keep with in the DX10 cards, theres no reason to go for a 4850 when you can get a 4890 for exactly $200.

Personally I would try to go for a 5770

Its not quite as powerful as a 4890, but has DX11, eats alot less power, and has alot more potential to go places since the 4890 are towards the end of there lifespan. Sapphire isnt even making the 4890 anymore it seems or id suggest a Sapphire 4890 over an XFX 4890. Both are good brands but I know the Sapphire Vapor-X units are great.

Yea and Canadian funds... But thanks for the help.
I'm running a Gigabyte GA MA785G-UD3H with a 5000+ BE X2 CPU and 4GB Crucial PC5400 667mhz ram right now... rebuilding. Going with a Phenom II 955 soon and upgrading ram as well. Not sure if I will stick with this board or swap it out for a DDR3 board... This handles 1066 and 1333(OC) max as well... so I'm not sure about its longevity. So I think I'll go with the 4850, unless I can get a nice deal on a 4870...

unless theres a reason to go bigger... open to suggestions.

    ^thats usefull to know.
It would be useful if you bothered looking at the links, youd see a little thing called free shipping. Of course NOW that he actually bothered to mention Canada that changes things, but thats not my fault.

4890 $10 over budget. Much better value then a 4850.

5770 for $175. With in range and better then a 4850.

Appreciate the help. But I stated shipping/taxes included in the $200 max cap and Canadian funds in the original post :p
Also, the 4890, while my ideal choice right now, is 210 before taxes and delivery, so therefore out of my price range. I'd like to force myself to buy it but as I said... trying not to snowball my overatures... if I can push to $230... maybe I can go to $250 and so on... wanted to go for about $150-$175 before but pushed myself to allow a $200 cap.
As for the 5770, a nice card and indeed better than a 4850, but since they offer a 4850 for $103 and the cheapest 5770 for $176... I don't know if I can warrant $73 for such a small increase in performance(compared to the price difference anyway)

I kind of want to wait a little bit for a good deal as the 5000 series will surely drop the 4000 series prices a bit more but with my good computer sitting in the corner doing nothing... It's hard to wait...
Yea I know the mobo I have has integrated GPU... but I was dumb enough to pull my 4670 and selling it without enabling onboard video... smart huh?

To fix the onboard video problem, research "clear cmos"

As for performance, the difference isnt huge no, but your going to notice it for sure. The 5700 series cards draw far less power, offer DX11, and eyfinity if you ever plan to use multiple monitors. Not to mention the drivers are still in the early stages and theres potential to continue to improve the performance. Last but least the ability to OC. The 5770 will oc better giving you a bigger performance boost in the end.

got my onboard graphics fixed... didn't know about the cmos thing... another thing for me to look up and log thanks.
Actually bought a dirt cheap pcie card, changed the bios and returned the card... oh well w/e works...
And since I am busy as heck these days and not gaming I might wait a few weeks to see what kind of deals I can get on a decent 5000 series card... or a 4870/90.

Glad the cmos info was useful. I cant gaurente it would have worked but considering the integrated gpu was most likley on in the stock configuration it should have worked fine.

If you can wait then Id say it wouldnt hurt in the least. Keep an eye on newegg and tigerdirect(I believe they have a Canadian site now) they both have deals on a daily basis so you never know when you might catch a good card on sale.

Yea, I find tigerdirect to be considerably more expensive than newegg. I've waited years for newegg to open a canadian site or start shipping to canada. I'm sure they opened a canadian site just to stop me from emailing ;)
I'm in a pickle right now... I want to wait a little, but not too much, but they just threw a 4850 on for $99 plus free shipping and the case I've been watching has dropped from $129 to $84 after rebate... all within my $200 budget... well, for a gpu AND case I can push a little over $200... So tempting...
Newegg must be following my afterdawn activity heh. Although I was worried last night when I checked the solano 1000 and they suddenly increased its reg price from $129 to $159... I was like "wow, so newegg is going to be one of those companies now..." heh, but Cust. Service sends me an email saying the price has changed again, and now $84... Might have to buy the case now and the card in a few weeks...

But yea, thanks again for the help with the cmos thing, will come in handy in the future I bet. I had turned off the onboard gpu to make sure there would be no problems with my PCIe HIS 4670, just didn't think to change a simple bios setting b4 pulling it and selling it.

    -------------------------------------
    EDIT:

Newegg DID screw me!!! I sent an email to newegg.ca cust. service and got sent to newegg.com site to show the price was lower... Don't see how its fair to sell for $84 USD while $159 CDN... so goodbye case...
