I have a geforce fx 5500 in my pc and want to play call of duty 4, I dont have alot of cash would like to spend as little as possible so a bit of help would be great. How is this card nVidia by EVGA e-GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 Video Card Will it run my game and what is the difference between the GS series and the GT series. This was my other thought buying this one Diamond Multimedia Radeon HD 3650 GDDR2 512MB Video Card I dont know what to do.
Needless to say the FX5500 won't play COD4. It's ancient. The 8400GS is a very slow graphics card but will work (ish), the HD3650 is better. However, the 5500 is AGP, these are PCI express cards. You could get a faster AGP graphics card, but these are not recommended as they are nowhere near as fast as their PCI express counterparts, and additionally, AGP systems typically have CPUs that are too slow to run modern games anyway. You would probably be better off waiting until you can afford to replace the entire system.
My current card is a BFG Fx5500 pci card. I have a pci express slot that I havent taken advantage of yet. I have a pentium 4 running a 3.0ghz and 1gig of pc3200 400mhz ddr ram. Looking to spend under a 100 dollars. The computer is a Sony vaio RB VGC-rb30 desktop
That's a little more favourable, however your CPU still falls under the 'slow for modern games' category, and being a Sony Vaio, the case in your PC will have difficulty cooling a better graphics card, and your power supply may also be insufficient. If all you need is to get Call of Duty 4 running, even if it's at minimum graphics detail, then buy an 8400GS, it will work fine. To play modern games well, however, an entire system rebuild will be necessary.

For under $100 and with a 300W PSU, your best bet is an 8600GT, which should match up decently to your 3GHz Pentium 4. Here is one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121223 This should allow you to handle CoD4 with decent settings. 1024 x 768 all high with soften smoke edges and shadows turned off. 2x AA. Should average 35FPS(about what my parents' 7600GT got) and should stay fairly smooth. Though maybe the Pentium 4 might bottleneck it vs the 2.4GHz X2 with the 7600GT.
