Ok, I need to settle something here with a friend. The card that the monitor plugs into in the computer is the video card? correct or uncorrect. If when you turn on the computer with the monitor turned on (and plugged into the computer) and the monitor is still blank and not showing any picture and/or saying no signal, then that is the video card? I know that the monitor works fine because I use it for another computer.
Yes, it is the video card. You've check the monitor, that was the first step. Now remove the video card, with the computer off, and reseat it a couple of times. If that doesn't work, I'd say the card is bad.
thanks for the reply.. another thing too, i pulled out the card and inserted another one from another computer which I know was working. that did not display anything either after being turned on. Now that other card that I plugged into the "not working" computer, should at least display the desktop with default settings of 800x600 right? I mean it should show something shouldn't it. could the actual slot be bad, that the card plugs in too?
could be.. might even be an IRQ conflict try swapping to another slot. and as always.. pull the power cord out of the computer before working on it.. and touch the side of the case to make sure you dont get a spark
I have tried resetting the card and nothing. Is there a way to replace the card without buying a new computer. There is only 1 slot that the card fits into, I believe it was an AGP slot. don't they have PCI video cards or no?
I think that it is the actual slot on the MOBO that is corrupted. That is why I referred to maybe having to buy a new comp.
if you only have 1 slot it fits in then its agp they do have PCI cards.. try and snag one and see how that works out even if you have to buy one i think at bestbuy they start out at like 20ish bucks but your agp might be fried.. you may want to check your bios for updates before going much further.. if they have a new bios update then that might fix your problem (note bios updates can be a bad thing if the update does not complete your motherboard may end up being dead till you get a new cmos chip)
I have to agree with fuggedup and codydog on this one. Sounds like the card is fried. But I'm going to go on a limb and ask this question anyways. This computer you're working on halfhere, does it have an on-board video card? If it does, then you will need to disable the on-board video card through your bios before installing the agp video card. It may not be the problem but I thought I ask anyways.
Does your motherboard have an on-board Vid card? If so, you need to tell the BIOS to init the AGP port first, not the PCI (the on-board video is seen as PCI). If you were to plug your monitor into the on-board video card connector, I bet you get an image. Hop into the BIOS, and switch the settings from PCI to AGP. Shut down the PC, then plug your monitor into the AGP card. Fire it up and, in theory, you should be good to go. Keep us posted. ~Rich
will I be able to even get into the BIOS if i am unable to see the splash screen upon booting. I mean, it is as if my monitor doesn't even detect and current from the card at all. The monitors orange light stays on and never "clicks" to green finding the signal. Will I be able to get into the BIOS anyways. Could it be a deeper issue? As for being an on board card, I am not sure. I know that it is not "sodered" on. the card slides in like a network card. How can I tell if the mobo has a built in video card. There are no other connections on the back to plug a monitor into. I really appreciate all the help. Thanks
your vid card,, look for another connection like that on the back of the pc.. idental connection. if not your motherboard dont have onboard video
