I just recieved my Viper chip in the mail, and have two concerns.

1: The instuctions on the website aren't very good or helpful, and I don't want to get into my gc without knowing what I'm doing. Does anyone have a CLEAR set of instrucions for installing the chip?

2: The chip I ordered didn't come with the rubber feets depicted on the page, are these necessary? If so are there any possible replacements?

    Thanks!

The whole actuall chip installation. You know, the whole progress of saughtering those wires in, placing the chips... I also don't understand where the usb cable plugs in :S I know I probably sound like a hopeless newbie, but I need clear instructions!

    meepgirl,

i've been looking around for step-by-step tutorials myself, but i haven't really found any. just bought the viper gc extreme modchip and plan to install it myself (with no soldering experience) this weekend. so far, i've just been doing some research because i don't want to mess anything up. maybe some of what i've done and found so far can help you:

    ---------
    1. [bold]soldering iron[/bold]http://www.electronickits.com/new/specials/specials.htm

    i bought a "learn how to solder" kit($12.95) and a multimeter ($9.95).
[the "learn how to solder" kit comes with a soldering iron, solder, solder iron stand, and all the parts to build a siren. i thought it would be a good idea to practice on something first before i actually do it on a gamecube+modchip. plus, you get the soldering iron, solder, and cutter. the multimeter is a good idea for doing the laser POT tweaking. also, if you buy both of them, you can get the "special price". normally they are $19.95 and $14.95]

i've also seen this website [http://www.epemag.com/solderfaq/default.htm] mentioned a ton of times to help people learn how to solder.

    2. [bold]disassembly[/bold] http://modthatcube.pxn-os.org/content/dis.htm

this guide will show you how to take your gamecube apart. i think it's best you also familiarize yourself with the insides of the gamecube. look at the next guides i'm going to link to and see where exactly the parts are (where to unscrew things, how to remove the heatsink, location of soldering points, and where you're going to connect the blue cables for the modchip).

    3. [bold]POT tweaking[/bold] [warning: link also contains pictures of marijuana, but once you scroll down you'll find the actual information] http://modthatcube.pxn-os.org/content/pot.htm

this is where the multimeter comes in handy. the instructions there should be self explanatory. doing this helps your gamecube read your burned DVDs. you might as well do it since you already have your gamecube disassembled.

    3. [bold]installing the modchip[/bold]
    viper gc http://modthatcube.pxn-os.org/content/vipergc.htm
    viper gc extreme http://www.iso420.com/ngc/vgce/index.htm

the first link is for the installation of the regular viper gc. the new viper gc extreme installs the same way as the regular viper gc, so you can use the instructions on that page with your chip. the only difference is the new viper gc extreme now uses a USB connector instead of a Parallel port. this shouldn't matter with the actual installation of the modchip, though. The USB programmer is placed in the "Serial Port 1" slot underneath the gamecube (turn over your gamecube and you can see what i'm talking about) . you'll just have to run the "Flat cable" that connects to the modchip down to the serial port slot. [here's an example http://www.iso420.com/ngc/vgce/usbfitted.jpg ]

i provided the second link, which is actually a review, so you have more pictures to work with. you can click on the images in the review to see bigger pictures, which can provide more detail on where to place things.

    ---------

it seems the rubber feet are needed to stabalize the USB programmer in the "Serial Port 1" slot. you might be able to figure out some other way to create a better fit so the USB programmer doesn't move around in there.

i'm hoping to maybe do a step-by-step tutorial myself to help out other people who don't really know where to start. i think the key is more detailed pictures. that all really depends on how much time i have though.

Thanks for your help! I actually think I might pull it off now... You're right about the pic thing, that was my real problem with the saughtering. I still can't believe I completley understand it:) The tutorial would be great for newbies like myself, with no experience. Now I'm about to take a crack at making the pen-screw drvier!

Agan, thanks tons for your help!
