virtaldub error

    I am attempting to add a modified .wav file to an avi.
    The original .avi file has AC-3 audio.
    In virtaldub have selected AC-3 ACM compression with the
    same properties as the orig avi.
    Virtualdub error: error initializing audio.. conversion not possible.
    check to make sure you have required codec.
    Exactly what do I need? An AC-3 compressor ? Where obtain ?
    Thanks in advance.
