Vob to .avi??

Hi, I was just wondering, how do you convert vob files to a .avi file?

I'm just curious to know that if I ripped one of my dvd's to my hd that was ay 3-4gb in size, can I make a smaller .avi file ?

Is there a certain software that will do this or would you have to use a few different types of software ?
