I have some mp3 and wav files that I want extract the vocals and just keep the instrumentals. I did some searches on google and came across some software solutions and some hardware solutions. Which is better the software or hardware solutions? Which give the better audio results? Which of the software/hardware do you guys recommend for this task?
Not to shoot down your idea, but the odds are you won't be very happy with the results of vocal removal tools if quality is an issue at all. If quality is an issue, just buy the karoke cds are whatever. The problem is that when you remove the vocal you are basically removing anything that is center panned. This is done by inverting the phase on one side (either left or right) of the stereo file. This means that snare, kick drum, and possibly bass guitar could all be effected, depended on how the song is mixed. Lastly, if the vocals are using any panned effects, panned backups, etc than you will still here those more or less. If you are gung ho about it, I would go with software just because I would assume that it would cost less. I've monkeyed with this in Sound Forge and had some okay results.
