    hello all.
heres what i want to try to do but not sure if it can be done (my) way or what?

i have my PC and flat screen in my room.
    the DVR is downstairs
the Router is in another room.

what i want to do is receive the channels we get downstairs in my room so i can watch TV in my room. i was hoping to be able to change channels from my room without affecting the channels downstairs??
we have a paid subscription for HD channels and stuff so i just want to know what hardware/ software would be required (if do-able) to allow me to watch channels we receive on the DVR downstairs up in my room.

    thanks

What do you mean by DVR, is that a tabletop box (like a cablebox with hard drive) or a PC base DVR?

If it's a tabletop DVR, there's probably no options for you to view in your computer.

On a pc base DVR, you have unlimited options. As long as you multiple TV tuner cards and software that can stream the video to other PC's over a LAN.

I have my mediaPC (3 tv tuners/4 hard drives/ sagetv software) in my livingroom running 24/7. There are 3 other computer in different rooms connected to the mediapc over the LAN. I can watch a different channel than what is playing on another computer.

What you want can be done, my mediapc is homebuilt.

    All you need is
1.) multiple PCI tuner cards (hauppaguge pvr-150 is the best for mediapc's due to built-in hardware encoders)
    2.) multiple hard drives (at least 2 x 500gb)
3.) sagetv software for the main computer
4.) sagetv client software for all the computer that will be connected to the main computer.
5.) The computer doesn't have to be high-end, a semprom 2800 with 1gb of ram will work fine for a mediapc.

what i have is just the regular tabletop. Cox HD DVR for TV's. so i guess i would just have to get a tuner card and some TV tuner software for my computer than?

i mainly want to watch channels like (spike TV, Speed, Fuel) stuff like that. no HBO or news or sports

If you have cable access in your room, just add a PCI tv tuner to your computer (if you want the livetv features get one with hardware mpeg encoders, PVR150). The PVR150 tuner card can be found for under 50.00 on the internet and just use your existing parts.

On my mediapc, I only have expanded cable (scifi/tnt/history etc) it works great.

Theres free mediapc software mythtv etc (but require a learning curve). For a single Computer beyondtv is very TIVO-like. For multiple computer setup sagetv is extremely reliable, I have had mine running non-stop for almost 3 years, never crashes or fails to record my shows.

Start small (and inexpensively) and later add more tuner cards and hard drives as required.
