Hey guys, I have a WD mybook home 1.5TB external drive. Have had no problems with it at all except for the stupid esata connection. PC is win7 i5750 etc that I built. The problem im having is the esata connection keeps crapping out (or so it appears). I had to trim back the connector jacket so it fit properly, and it now does. Connections are nice and tight, leaving me to believe it cant be a connection issue. Anyone here have any thoughts on this? This is pissing me right off now. Im trying to transfer 4GB files to the drive and a couple work fine then the next one terminates at somepoint during the transfer. Reboot of the drive is the only way to restore the connection (temporarily).
It is probably the WD controller in the external drive. ESATA is just SATA with a different connector, so it is very reliable (when done right), far more reliable & fast than USB 2.0. However, WD (and most others) makes their external drives with adapters for ESATA...so it goes SATA>adapter>sata instead of just SATA>SATA, This causes lots of problems. You might try bypassing the circuit board and just connecting the drive direct to the esata port by using a esata-to-sata adapter cable.
