    Hello everyone

I am thinking of buying an antivirus program and I am not sure which is the best. I have McAfee but I am in doubt about it's true protection. I realise the more you spend is the better you may get, but this may not always be the case. If anyone has a recommendation please let me know. Any points of view relating to a good antivirus program is welcome. Many thanks..

There's a few threads on here about this.

Opinions differ, but most seem to agree that AVG7 free is one of the best.
I wouldn't argue with that personally. I have had bad experiences with Norton in the past, so I would say steer clear of it, however, someone who hasnt had issues will say its fine.

Others worth a look would be (in no particular order, some free, some not)

    NOD32
    Avast
    Kaspersky
    Bitdefender
    Anti-Vir
    Panda
    Pc-Cillin

Hope it helps, it's a very personal choice really.

My bottom line, if it's free you want, then AVG7 free edition is a brilliant program.

If it's paid, then only becasue I've had good experience, NOD32.

    But they're all worth a look :)

AVG is the best I have found. And like DMW said..............it's free. When I installed and ran it, it found 8 virus' that Norton never saw. There is a "Pro" version to buy, but I like the free version. Get it here:

You may have to look around for the free version, because they want to sell you the pro version.
    Good luck!

    Edit:
    Here is the free version.

I agree as well, AVG is probably the best. I used to use Norton. Not only does it take up tons of hard disk space, and use a lot of system resources, but its probably one of the worst ones! When I uninstalled Norton and ran AVG, it instantly found eight viruses...two of which were trojans! Okay...enough ranting about stupid Norton.

Stick with the free stuff...its way better. AVG and AVAST are on top.

I agree with everyone here. While i'm currently using BitDefender (a great antivirus program), I've also used the free versions of Avast and AVG and I have nothing negative to say about either. They're both great antivirus programs and the price can't be beat. If you want to go the free route(not a bad route) those are the two antivirus programs i'd recommend.

As for Norton, IMO, total crap. A resource hog, yet still a crappy antivirus program. My experience with Norton is similar to djscoop's. Except my Norton install just totally went whacky out of nowhere and wouldn't run. I tried and tried to fix it but to no avail. Eventually I uninstalled it and tried Avast. And found trojans and viruses. Surprise, surprise.

If you are wanting to pay $$ for an antivirus I don't think you would go wrong with NOD32, BitDefender, or Kaspersky. Just my opinions. :)

Thanks for the info. I am going to look at these, but Nod 32 maybe the one I get.
The problem I found with McAfee is that sometimes it has just disabled itself while I was on the net, not very impressed at all. That is the time it needs to run properly.
I will look at all the one's you all have suggested and I will post back as to which one I chose. Thanks again for your comments so far..

    Thank you very much everyone.
I have now bought AVG 7.1 Professional and it works great. By the way the McAfee virus scan I had stopped completely all by itself because I would'nt pay the yearly subscription fee, so I am very glad I got rid of it and anyway it was not as good as McAfee say.
I will never recommend McAfee as it is a con when it completely stops even though you bought it in the first place..
