What discs do I need/is my drive compatible (360)?

Hi all, new to the forum! I had my xbox 360 flashed a few days ago and I am wishing to make backups of some of my games. I have this drive:

optiarc dvd rw ad-5170a

on the front it ssays DVD (DL) but im not sure if that is reading or writing. My dad has a new drive downstairs which I can check if this proves to be of no use.

Also, I am happy that I will be needing to use verbatims for good quality, but theres the 8x speed, and the (slightly more expensive) 2.4x speed. Which am I wanting to buy? I dont want a fair bit of money for some discs if they are useless.
