find out what type of ram you are using as some p4 boards had both ddr & sdram but could only run 1 type at a time. find out what speed your current ram is running like pc100, pc133, pc800, pc2100, pc2700 or pc3200

if its a new computer with a P4 I doubt its using PC100 or PC133 SDRAM. There's also the new super fast DDR400 ram. Check the manual for your motherboard, it should tell you everything you need to know.

my previous p4 ecs board had both ddr & sdram slots so that is why i posted that comment as we don't know how new his system is. it could also have rambus ram on it for all we know.

1 of the ram sticks might have a label on it stating the speed. also when posting the ram might show it's speed on the screen.
