What do you use when WMP failed to play wmv and avi files?

    Greetings:

    I download several *.avi, *.wmv from France and I am unable to play it. Most of them can be played either with Window Media Player, BSPlayer or MV2Player. However, a few can't be played by all three. WMP shows an error message "Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error.", BSPlayer a blank screen and MV2Player a "failure" message. Is there anything else out there that can either fix or analyze and pinpoint to the problems?

    VLC is free and self contained (no pesky external codecs). If VLC can't play it chances are the file is corrupt.
