its called a PS/2 port, because it was originally developed for IBM's PS/2 family of computers, called "Personal Systems/2". I believe PS/2 stood for Personal System 2. It was the first major architectural change in PC motherboards since the release of the original IBM PC - basically IBM's 2nd personal computer system design. MCA (Microchannel Architecture) was a new motherboard design that was implemented in the late 80s and included the PS/2 connector as part of it's specs. These days the PS/2 system is not longer being manufactured, but the redesigned keyboard and mouse connectors lived on.
