I ordered a Dell off Ebay & was wondering if anyone knows who's dvd burners they use in the Inspiron 530 Desktop? I understand that I can replace it if it's Crappy But if it's a decent drive I might leave it in as a Reader & secondary burner?

well at tge time I was more concerned with The memory Which I'm gonna Upgrade to faster & more memory ! I was just wondering about the Dvd Burner because I was trying to decide whether to keep it in the Computer or Yank it and go with something better? I suppose I'll find out when it arrives though so I'll wait till then !

I have bought about 7 Dell's and never lucked out and got a burner that i didn't yank out and replace with something better. There was some prized Ben-Q 1640's back in the non SATA days but i never got one mostly Sony.

Most of the new ones with fista included seem to come with those nasty OEM HL-ST-DT things. Really seems to depend where you are, and which back street builder is throwing them together for dell. I spend a few days every week removing them from off the shelf systems from Dell and HP and replacing with usually Pioneer though honestly it depends what is in stock. Maybe you will get lucky. I have seen a couple of Dells using Samsung sata burners.. which seem ok apart from the tray refusing to open.. why can't samsung solve that problem??.. possibly those are customer replacements or special order..
If it's a HL-DT thing it will probably work as a dvd rom for a while, but they have a life of about 6 months as burners.. (that is if they last more than 20 burns)

I suppose it's a way to keep overheads down to pay for that nasty expensive OS, even with the kickback..

just for giggles.. found this ;) [IMG] They must make a fortune.. I do XD

varnull- oKAY ! i'M Getting a $20.00 Rebate on my Corsair memory I ordered from Newegg so Maybe I'll Put That towards a new burber or two ?IdeAlly I would have transerreed my BenQ1650 & Nec 3500 to the new Computer but they're both Non-Sata So that's not happening unless I make externals out of them ? & I already have a Liteon External & A old nec-2500 that I made a external so Running 4 externals woold be a bit extreme!! anyways Hopefully It'll come with a Decent Drive ? if not As they say in those Car Stereo Contest " If you can't Crank it ?Yank It!!" & I'll replace it with something Better ! Thank you varnull and everyone for the help and support and I'll update everyone Once I'm Up and burning on the new box!!! Ciao!!!

Well gang as always thanks for your help & support ! I got The dell finally and Apparently it Comes with a PBDS DvD Burner ? {PHILIPS BenQ Digital Storage } PBDS16W1 SATA - I'M not that familiar with Philips Burners but I've had Great Burns with My Benq Dw-1655 in my old computer so I suppose I'll Use this'un till it goes El- Crappo on Me? I Might be looking into another drive though so I can do simultaneous burns & Disc to disc copies when I need or want to without hooking up my externals - Too Bad My Old Benq 1655 & Nec-3500 are'nt sata they would probably great in the new dell But They're not so I guess I'll Consider Some Lite-ons or whatever the New Top Drives are and Wait & see ? again Fella's Thanks and Have a Great Day !!!!!!

My experiences of Philips branded drives have been mixed.. some have been the worst drives I have ever seen (apart from the aforementioned HL-ST scrappers) and others have made beautiful burns for many years. I think Philips have quality control issues ;) If it's a good one you have got a good drive which will last. only big problem with all philips has been lack of firmware updates... speaking of which.....

Well! i've got An external lite-on that I can use as well so I am not completly done for if the Pbds ( Philips?) Drive turns out to be a turd ? Though I may add another internal drive (burner) I have'nt Done a lot of research yet on who's or which brand to get? samsung203B ?,sony /nec's and Lite-on Drives seem to be the Favorites here lately ! I lean towards the Lite-ons because is I understand right they,re good drives and they can booktype But I plan to keep an open mind for now ! Thanks for your help! Ciao!!!
