What is the best format to convert aac to so that after it's merged with video most dvd players will recognise it and the quality won't be to lossy?

Are you're talking about creating a normal DVD ?
Then follow the DVD standards. This would mean LPCM, ac3, mp2.

If you mean something else, please explain further.

I'm trying to get a DVD to play in a xvid/divx certified dvd player and aac dubs aren't working that's all.

You said the player is xvid certified, so the answer below
applies to xvid/divx. My first answer applies to DVD mpeg2.

Try MP3. I think standalone support might vary slightly:
For example, mine plays the audio in mp3,Wave & ac3, but not sure if they all do.
