I've been seeing the name AMD Sempron show up at various online stores that I browse and I have no idea were it fits in the processor ladder, so to speak. Is it better than Duron? Is it better than Athlon? Are there any advantages to having a Sempron processor? Is it replacing the Duron? ??? And what is AMD Opteron? I've seen that name as well. Any knowledge is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Forget it. Found it. http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_11599,00.html It is a replacement for the Duron from what I can tell.
thats right and the direct competitor of intel celeron d cpu.. but they are really good low cost computer solution better then duron but big step behind of xps for ex: sempron 2500+ clock speed: 1700mhz fsb 266mhz 256 kb L2 cache throughtbred core vcore 1.5v ---------------------- athlon xp 2500+ clock speed: 1833mhz fsb 333mhz 512 kb L2 cache barton core 1.6v and opterons cpu are amd cpu for servers and workstations they can work on dual core mobos!!
Dr XP, you are not necessarily correct, some Semprons are based on the Athlon64 are are more powerful than the AthlonXP. I believe that applies to the Sempron 3100+ and no doubt any higher ones that come out. Note however that despite being based on the Athlon64 these are still strictly 32 bit.
To put it into simple terms the Semprons are replacing the Duron and the Athlon XP. Most Semprons have a FSB333Mhz and some have a 512kb L2 cache like the Barton core.
both of you are almost right but.. amd issue the semprons as a low cost bussines solution read the word low cost... how thwey do that by not using the same stuff the put on athlon. is true the sempron 3100 is base on the 64 bit arc is a 754 socket but still 32 bit and in performance is below the xp 3000 barton,2800+. and amd officially said theres no more of the 754 skt sempron
The Sempron 3100+ performance according to all reviews I have read is above any Athlon XP, indeed in many benchmarks it beat the Athlon64 2800 , nevermind the Athlon XP. It also beat the majority of Intel P4s. all together a good chip. However as it uses the same MBs as an Athlon64 2800+, and has virtually the same 32bit performance I would buy the Athlon64 2800+ instead as they are about the same price (in UK) and the Athlon64 would be able to run windows XP 64 edition and supported software.
Dr Xp To quote from the review you link to "We should note that the Sempron 3100+ processor delivers good performance even without overclocking. Having only 256 kilobytes of L2 cache memory, it is just 1-2% slower than the full-featured Athlon 64 2800+." which is exactly what I have said above. Ie the Sempron 3100+ performance is well into the Athlon64 teritory and therefore is faster than AthlonXP chips.
look semprons are really good processors in both 462 and 754. i use a system with the xp 3200+ and another with the sempron 3100+ with same memory size hardd and you can notice the difference between them!. xp 3200+ is a big step ahead in performance not talking about the benchmark talking about naked eye impression!
Perhaps your Socket A MB is a better one than your Sempron one? Many factors other than CPU and memory can effect the overall system performance. The Sempron 3100+ is currently a brilliant chip for budget concious people who are brave enough to overclock and are not worried about 64bit. For people not interested in overclocking the Athlon64 2800+ at basically the same price and 32bit performance as the Sempron 3100+ is the better choice as it gives the option of upgrading to Windows XP 64. In any case yes a high end AthlonXP like the 3200+ will still perform well with todays software, but ultimately it is a thing of the past like all 32bit chips, so I would see the Sempron 3100+ and it much in the same boat with a slight advantage to the Sempron because for now anyway you can still buy an Athlon64 2600+ or 2800+ and stick it on the Sempron's MB to get 64 bit functionality. On a different note now that Intel have released a 64 bit CeleronD I wonder if AMD will make future Semprons 64 bit?
DrXP. It doesn't make economic sense for AMD to release new chips that are inferior to a past brand, that's just ridiculous.
induna thats why the got the xp out the market with athlon xp in the market who the h.*ll will buy low-cost low perform cpus
