Downloaded a movie from newsgroups and got a file AVSEQ01.mpg. Tried to play the file with Windows Player but that didn't work. Can I get this thing playing somehow? Please help. Tried to contact the source in the newsgroup, but without success.
Im pretty sure thats an mpeg (VCD format) file. If you have the correct codesc installed you should be able to right click the file and select open with Windows Media Player.
its an mpeg2 video file(svcd), you need to install a software dvd player(powerdvd or windvd) or install some mpeg2 codecs if you want to watch it thru winmediaplayer(which i dont recommend). if it was a mpeg file from a vcd the file name would be AVSEQ01.dat.

I've tried powerdvd but without success. Is it possible that the file is copied 1-to-1 from cd, while it should be converted with for instance Isobuster? I think the file will end in my trash bin.
try a program called win dvd 5 it never fails. i had an (*avi) file once that wouldn't play so i opened it with that and it worked fine.
No, AVSEQ01.DAT is a 'ripped riff file'. I only know a method to convert it into a true MPEG file: run VCDEasy, then go to Tools --> MPEG Tools --> Cdxa2mpeg. Then select the .DAT file you want to convert (from D:\MPEGAV\AVSEQ01.DAT if it's a VCD or from D:\MPEG2\AVSEQ01.DAT is it's a SVCD), then select the location of the output file by clicking on "MPEG File" (By default: video, which means that is VIDEO.MPG) then press 'Convert'. Some applications are able to play the AVSEQ01.DAT file, but I think it's better to convert it into .MPG, first. No qualty loss and after that you can load it with Virtualdub, TMPGenc (if it's a MPEG-1, or comes from a VCD), Womble MPEG Editor (if it's a MPEG-2, or comes from a SVCD), and so on. Sorry, I don't know how to build a brand new (S)VCD from AVSEQ01.DAT (I ususlly need to subtitle them, I never do that conversion).
no probs m8 i cant say ive ever seen a svcd where the avseq01 file has had a .dat extension on it, in my experience all svcds have been true mpeg2 files, vcds on the other hand all have .dat extensions. but even if you have some svcds with .dat extensions(which i have yet to see) there is no need to extract the .dat then convert to a true mpeg, all you do in isobuster(and this will work for vcds as well) is when you extract and isobuster asks where you want it saved and what name you want the extracted file to be, simply put a .mpg extention at the end of avseq01 and you will get a true mpeg1/2 file not a .dat which will have to be converted anyway, this will save some time and hassle. media player classic can play mpeg1(mpeg2 will require you install a mpeg2 codec) with a .dat extention no worries at all and its free, but yes you'll have to convert the file a true mpeg if you want to edit it in some way. thats very strange because powerdvd is a very versitile program, even with the ability to read and playback a mpeg2 file without extracting it from the bin image first. do you still have the full svcd image intact?? or do you only have the avseq01.mpg file?? if you have the full svcd bin image(it may not be a bin image by the way but that doesnt matter) try and extract using isobuster again and make sure when you extract that you select the "extract but filter only m2f2 mpeg frames" option or the file will become corrupted. then try to get it playing in powerdvd again, if that doesnt do the trick well most probably the image itself is corrupt and in that case yes in the trash it goes. cheerz _X_X_X_X_X_[small] SNOOCH TO THE MUTHA fusking NOOCH!!! -Jay-[/small]
I never played with the 'ripped riff files', but from VCDEasy's "MPEG Tools - Cdxa2mpeg" I've seen that the extension can be also: .MPG, .MPEG, .M1P, .M2P (so I assume a SVCD has one) and .MMD. The problem is, and I never don't know this, what do you want to do with the 'rippped riff file'? I really don't know if TMPGenc can load it, just because I never did it. I only know that that the move inside a VCD image is NOT a 'pure .MPG' so I assume you have to convert it to a 'true MPEG file' to manipulate it.
Well, I checked better and I found that AVSEQ01.mpg is, as mick69 started to say but without distinguishing it from a 'true MPEG file', a 'ripped riff file' from a SVCD (located in the D:\MPEG2 directory of the disc), like AVSEQ01.dat is a 'ripped riff file' from a VCD (located in the D:\MPEGAV directory of the disc).

Ok Mick69, sorry. I don't really know if AVSEQ01.MPG is a 'true' .MPG file or should be converted to turn it into a True .MPG. Shame on me...
