like it says in the title. im just interested to know what kind of server holds up possibly the most popular forum site on the web
are you planning on starting your own site or something? i could only imagine that they have a fleet of servers to handle the workload.
a fleet, well wouldnt go that far, you wouldnt need a fleet. maybe 3 nice beauties. on a big phat connection. or you could locate some geographically for better speed where needed. rent em out so to speak. doint it this way. maybe 6 at max
We have: -three webservers, each with Dual Xeon 2.8GHz/2GB memory/73GB SCSI HDD -two database servers, both with Dual Xeon 2.8GHz/4GB memory/73GB SCSI -one ad server (Dual Xeon 2.8/4GB/73GB SCSI) -one download server (P4 2.4/1GB/80GB IDE) -one image server (Dual Xeon 2.8/2GB/73GB SCSI) All interconnected to each other via second NIC and our own switch. All running RHES3, webservers running Apache and BlueDragon, db servers running MySQL. Currently no serious plans to increase the number of boxes, although we're looking for variety of load balancing/failover solutions to determine which would suit best for our needs to load-balance the webservers in more sophisticated way.
xeon? are the offices of AD lined with gold? with marble floors? or do you know somebody who knows somebody with the discounted merchandise?(wink, wink)
As virtually all of the world's websites operate, we do not own our servers, we use an ISP and pay rent for the servers, bandwidth, certain level of support and so on. Our ISP is called ThePlanet, which is one of the largest ISPs in the world, focusing on dedicated servers. We get decent discount due the relatively large amount of hardware we have, but yes, they do cost quite a lot of money, so when deciding to use ad blockers when visiting our site, think twice @sui-cyco: We'd actually prefer to have quad Opterons for our database servers, but our ISP doesn't have them available, at least yet. Our good olde db servers tend to hit load levels of 4.00 or more during peak times..
how much office space does the whole setup take? and i heard that servers have to be kept under direct air conditoning. is that true? can you fry an egg on one of those bad boys?
