i am finnish person and we have long traditions celebrate christmas. turkey we don`t eat just very much, ham tastes to us better. and christmas sauna is to us quite important. what kind of traditions you have ? and indeed christmas tree is part tradition, and we finnish people we believe that santa claus lives here in finnish place which we say for the ear mountain (korvatunturi) and we wait tourists to the lapland. but please don`t frighten it`s only legend to us. truly children believe.
umm lets see...well we get a tree, have turkey and ham (sometimes), we give gifts, hang stockings, go to family get togethers... pretty much a regular christmas(in canada)
My family has a breakfast casserole and then a beef roast for dinner. We stay right at home since we have young children. Our Parents come to us now. I couldn't ask for any better christmas present than to spend it not traveling.
All of my family comes over and No tv and we talk and try out our new gifts. My mom always get me the only type of egg nog i drink -cf berger- and then we go to my fiances house with no talking eating around an uncomfortable table and then go huddle around a 19 in tv in silence for 2 hrs or so. Dont get me wrong I study film so I never mind watching movies but theres a time and a place you know? merry xmas to all at afterdawn.
I'm a first generation American but my family is from Quebec as are a lot of people in my home town. We have an unusual tradition which Americans find a little odd but which I understand is practiced in some areas of Europe. Its called "un reveillon". On Christmas Eve day, people get a lot of rest and sleep most of the day. That evening, many get together as a group and go to "midnight mass" (I'm not sure if that is an entirely catholic thing). Christmas dinner is actually held after the midnight mass ... a huge feast with all the trimmings held about three o'clock in the morning; the whole dinner and party is called "un reveillon" while the kiddies are asleep (though they're usually just pretending). It really is a lot of fun. We're not very big on the presents thing...parents buy presents for their kids but that's about it and from what I've seen, I'm glad we don't place importance on that part of Christmas practiced by many others. With our french ancestory, the getting together as family and friends and sharing dinner and a good time is very important though.
@gerry1 yah...ive heard of that before and i have just one question, how do u manage to sleep in the middle of the day? and ur right about the hole present thing, Christmas has become a very comecial holiday and is now mostly about presents to most people and the other thing is that its become less and less christian because many non christians now celibrate it JUST because of the presents. some times i wonder... @ireland Wow it almost rivals my dads colection LOL
