What makes a dvd recorder record on both medias and why dont they make all recorders that way because then you wouldn't have too worry what media you bought.

I have a emerson that records on -r -rw and brother has the new ilo v5 that records on both now I already ask the manufacturer about this and they say its ok.

i have the emerson as well.... you can transfer them to + media with the help of your pc... if you have a dvd burner on your pc.... thats what ive been doing.... just get you some rw's for the standalone.... that way your not buying two disc each time.... the rw's will last an extremely long time if there taken care of properly

If the burner is capable of burning to + or - disks than it would most likely be Firmware.

Example: The LiteOn 5045 will burn to both + or - media
The ilo 04 is made By LiteOn and has a burner capable of burning both + and - disks but by design will only burn a + disk.
This could be called a sales gimic.
If the code in the firmware that limits the ilo to + disks, could be found, the ilo could be made to burn + or -

    Edit:
I do not know of any combo or any recorder with HDD that will allow a copy protedted disk to be copied from the dvd to the HDD, or to the DVD

However the 04 will copy anything. I do have to play a protected disk in another player and than record to the ilo HDD or DVD. This is in Real Time

    http://ncc2315.com/ilo/

At present the ilo cannot burn a - disk
Like the LiteOn, with hack, they have a 3 hr LP mode and are MY free.
    They are non compliant

    [Edit]
The above is for some of the newer LiteOn units and the ilo 04 series,
which is discontinued, but some are still avail at some WalMart stores and WalMart Online
NOT the 05 units they are not made by LiteOn and cannot be hacked
