    Hey everyone,
I'm doing my first build atm, I need to know what Operating System to go with. I was going to chose Vista, but then I noticed there was something called Windows 7 coming out soon. Do you think I should just get XP for now and then upgrade to Windows 7 or something when it comes out, instead of getting Vista?

    Everyone thanks a lot :D
I'm gunna get linux for now, then i'll consider windows 7 when it comes ;)

Personally, I never liked Vista at all as some programs are not compatible yet for Vista. I heard Win7 is a clone of XP and a lot better, so I would stick with XP.

    lol who told you that?
Go with Vista,it will be easier to upgrade to windows 7 as opposed to having to do a clean install with xp

It's hardly a "clone" but if you would call Win7 that, it's a clone of Vista, not of XP.

On a personal level i'd say stick with XP, but that doesn't rule out trying linux (after all its free) however if you looking to play the latest games Vista may be the better choice.

mitchls - You'll need to remove the advertising link from your signature. Forum Rules are in mine.

External links are ok provided they're not used to advertise. Sam above (for instance) has got some obvious well-known links in his signature but they're not used to advertise or pimp external forums/other sites etc.

'fraid yours was quite clearly averting our eyes towards a.n.other forum site where you frequent, that's a big no no. If you had a shoutbox profile setup you could have the forum linked in there as shoutboxes aren't yet governed by the same rules (well they're governed only buy mod's discretion at present).

Isn't the purpose of afterdawn forums and forums in general to share information and make the internet community a better place? And to offer advice to our fellow man? i guess afterdawn lost sight of that, so i wont be posting again.

It is indeed about sharing info, but there's a difference in helping people here at Afterdawn and helping yourself to divert people from here to a site of your own.

i can only presume from your comments that you're unhappy about posting here if it stops you averting peoples' eyes to your own site. 'fraid our rules are clear on these matters. Notice how i gave you a freebie of advice by telling you that you could publish details of said site in a shoutbox if you had one, just not on the forums. I assume you don't like this suggestion as posters wouldn't be treated to the link for your site each time you post. ...rules are still rules..

That's your decision mitch, but if you actually thought about it you'd realise why this rule exists.

You're still missing the point. To the staff of this site it's like 'Hi! I'm mitchls! Come over to my forum, it's better than this one!"
call it vanity if you like, but to many it still comes across as rude. Any respectable forum member should realise they are agreeing to a set of rules when they sign up.

That's entirely not true if you look at all my posts i have either asked insightful questions or offered my advice and asked for nothing in return. nor have i started Topics and/or Posted solely to advertise my own services.

Enough of this nonsense. It's plain and obvious what you are here for, and your latest signature proves it. You had polite and detailed advice on what not to do and why. You were also advised that you could publish details of your site(s) in a shoutbox profile.

Yet you continue to play dumb and then post links to your own site(s) in a new signature. I'm done wasting breath on someone wanting a free ride. Enjoy your own site(s).

The thread can now continue with it's original topic..

so sammorris is allowed to post links in there sig, but i wasn't also two of those links were not mine, chris pirillo is a "life streamer" one was mine and the other was afterdawn.

How do you know that sammorris or anyother user for that matter does not have any association with the links in there signature?

the only difference is openly said that that was my site.

If you check my other 41 posts you will see that non of them contain "spam" or "advertising" but helpful advice, being punished for having a link my sig seems highly unfair. Considering that some user may even be being paid for having a link in their signature, - advertising.

Simple fact is any link that is diverting away from afterdawn is advertising whether intentional or not,

    having sites like http://www.scan.co.uk http://www.aria.co.uk http://www.newegg.com http://www.ncixus.com

is advertising those site regardless. so surly external urls should be banned from sigs?

Anyway i decided voice my opinion and strong objections in a mature manner rather than creating lots of spam threads.

You may want to adjust your contradictory rules.

Interesting.. but pointless.. I have links in my sig also, but they are not plugging anything of a commercial nature.. the opposite in fact as unless I put the link then the afterdawn code directs the word "software" to a$$hatting microcrap!! .. I link it to the FSF instead, death to proprietary closed drm rubbish..

Back to the OP .. I think on a new system with those specs you will find a MAJOR system boost by running a nice state of the art linux.. sabayon is very tasty and should have pretty much everything working out of the box... or be more conservative and trust good old debian to work with all the listed hardware, after working out how to install a proprietary graphics driver of course.

Fista.. not on your life.. you might as well throw it in the bin now as waste all that time and money on rubbish like that... Try some free linux, and check that the hardware all works.. maybe you will see the light.. because after using a REAL os instead of M$ bloat and scam chances are you will never look back XD

Just wanted to add.. windoze7 IS NOT a clone of XP.. it's like 2000/me relationship with fista.. same kernel, same drm.. same rubbish that is being peddled here.. the betas, just like fista, will bear no relation to what is eventually pushed down everybodys throats with retailer and manufacturer anti-trust activities yet again. It's time our governments grew some balls and put a stop to the retailer kickback from M$

Or, alternatively, just ignore the one in a thousand users that doesn't like them.

    Ok The Rules:

You may post external links - But do not advertise

Every external link in a sig is advertising whether it was intentional or not. Because it's saying "look at this site, it's so great and helpful i had to put a link to it in my sig"

You may post links to external sites, however you must not be associated with them.

    Unenforceable for most part.

How can i obey those contradictory rules?

I have a link in my sig it's classed as advertising. other people have four links in there sig to Online Stores. It's not advertising... Come on think...

For me personally, I like Vista better than XP (just suits my tastes better), except for the annoying security features. However, when Windows 7 comes out, I think that would be the best OS to get, as that is what I will be doing too. So my advice is to either get a cheap version of Vista or XP (preferably Vista if you can), then upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out.
