To start I am not trying to get any AMD V. Intel going so go some where else if you want to flame. I would like to build a new PC for(listed by task frequency) 1 Internet 2 DVD Back up / viewing 3 MP3 4 Gaming And of course I want to be able to all these tasks at once with no lag or performance decrease and silent operation and a future upgrade path My current system specs: Barton 2500 (not oc'd) 1GB CAS 2-2-2-5 PC2700 WD80JB 7200rpm HDD 9700 Pro 128MB Plextor PX504A DVD-RW I thought to go Intel since I will be building completly new and go Duel Core. I also like Intel's Matrix RAID option. (RAID 0/1 with only 2HDD) I'm not really interested in SLI or Crossfire since I don't game very often. What I want to do is rip DVDs and MP3's hella fast and not have wait to go about my other impotant business Thanks for the pointers!
lol its not gonna do all of them at once - no way, but it sounds to me as if you should choose a p4 especially as you list gaming as a low priority
I did not mean for that to be taken literaly. I just want to be able to multi-task. Now I have to walk away while backing up a DVD. I would like to be able to continue other tasks instead.
while while backing up DVDs or doing any other CPU intensive activity, you won't really be able to do much on your PC, other than maybe browsing the internet. However, a faster processor will help speed up the DVD encoding and DVD burning process, so a new P4 would suit you nicely, but wil 64 bit OS on the horizon, you may want to look into a AMD 64 bit processor before you spend too much money....
windows 64bit is available now, and linux has had them for a while, just waiting on programs and games to change over from 32. An intel system will be a lot more expensive than amd for the same specs (ddr 400 compared to ddr2 etc). Why not overclock and clean out the system you already have?? gig of ram should be plenty, buy another hd for storage so your current one can be your os and programs, clean install to remove all the stuff that accumulates, just an idea
